Lumber Tax
Is Urged
WASHINGTON, D.C.
Congressman Harold T.
Johnson of the 2nd, mountain-valley counties, district
has urged the Ways and
Means Committee to retain
existing tax regulations involving the lumber industry.
In a statement presented
tothe Committee, Representative Johnson said that the
proposal to alter the capital
gains treatment of timber
would jeopardize the stability of the lumber industry
which already is in dire
straights,
"Altering the capital gains
treatment of timber, " Congressman Johnson testified,
“would destroy any incentive
toinvest in timber, reforestation and conservation. Job
Opportunities will decline.
"The Communities affected could’ be damaged at
a time when they are already
beset with problems inherent
in the lumber industry and
amplified by the current
competition from the Canadian lumber-imports, The
Jones Act, the threat of competing building materials,
etc. We cannot urge too
strongly that your committee
delete this proposal in offering tax reform recommendationstothe Congress, " Congressman Johnson said.
