: apie Fis h And phate Division ~ Offers Trout Rewards BYOU -—-Despite the numbers. _Of fish caught in Lake Tahoe, not everyone visits its attrac ~ tive shores simply to go fishing. But now 300 lucky fishermen are going to havea chance to hit the jackpot. As part of the fisheries study being conducted by the Department of Fish and Game tosee if fishing in the lake can be improved, 300 reward tags are being placed on Mackinaw trout. Some of these trout are now swimming aroundthe lake, others will be released during the next two months, Five dollars will be mailed out to each fishermanreturning rewardtags, The reward money for this tagging program is being donated by the South T ahoe Rod and Gun Club through its affiliate, Lake Tahoe Fisheries, Inc., a group of private sportsmen which actively cooperates withthe Lake Tahoe Fisheries Study. This trout tagging program was initiated last month by California Department of Fish and Game biologists as part of the over-all fisheries study at Tahoe. This study, which is financed in part with with-federal funds under the Dingwell-Johnson program, is seeking more knowledge about the fisheries of the lake to. see if it is possible toimprove the quality of the fishing there. The Nevada Department of Fish and Game is cooperating in ies study. In addition sothe Mackinaw-trout fitted out with re~“wardtags, numbers of brown Season Opens For Salmon SACRAMENTO California’s commercial fishing season for king and silver salmon will open April 15 and run through September 29, the Department of Fish and Game reminded fishermen this week. There isno bag limit, but both species must be taken by hook and.line only. King salmon may be no less than 26 inches long and silver salmon no less than 25 inches long, measured from the tip of the snout to the extreme tip of the tail. Provisions of the California Fish and Game Code authorize a commercial silver, salmon season starting April’ 15 at the same time as the: king salmon season (as listed; above) unless the states of. Washington and Oregon pre" hibit the taking of silver sal m&n by commercial trolling . prior to July 1. Neither: Washington nor Oregon have and rainbow trout are also being released wearing nonreward tags. All these tags are the “disk-dangler” type and are attached just below the dorsal fin of each fish. All tags should be returned tothe California Department of Fish and Game, 722 Capitol Avenue, Sacramento 14, California. Information accompanying the tag should include date caught, place caught, and type of gear used, Department addressed envelopes: for returning tags have been distributed around the lake at boat harbors and sporting goods and other major stores. Every fisherman, whether he sends in a reward or nonreward tag, will receive a commendation card telling him when and where his trout was released. From tag returns, biologists will be able to determine the portion of the Mackinaw population being caught by anglers. Tag returms will also increase knowledge on movement and migration patterns of Mackinaw, rainbow, and brown trout associated with feeding and spawning habits. All of this information is vital to the Department of Fish and Ga me in recommending sound angling regu-_ lations for Lake Tahoe and in. determining ways to improve fishing in the lake. of Commerce. presented to Neva Shown with the twins is Alice McGee and Larry Farrell, presidents of the tines City and Grass Valley chambers RUNNERSUP ---Second and third place trophies for a physical fitness test conducted by the Marine Corps were Union School twins Bill and Bob-Lum. Over 250,000 youngsters -willhave received their certificates indicating successful completion of the hunter safety program when the classes scheduled for the coming week are completed, This is an average of over 27,000 youngsters trained each year since the hunter safety program began in 1954. Proposal To Boast rout Fishing Set no change in the present catchable trout planting program, but advances the idea _ of supplementing the state ‘ stocking of trout by encouraging cities, counties, or private enterprise to plant additional trout in waters near population centers. This could increase angling opportunities. The department states it is financially unable to plant trout in the state's warmwater reservoirs, even though winter water temperatures may be suitable fortrout. To stock the many warmwater lakes near cat ek we areas with trout each winter would cost upwards of a million dollars a year, which the DFG doesn't have, the department explained. A few such trout angling programs are already being financed through small daily use fees with outstanding success, the DFG said, and there appear to be opporuntities for many more.
