(Emma Wixom Nevada was born at the historic Alpha hydraulic diggin's in Nev. Co. near Washington on Feb. 7, 1859) ey Soone day Dr. Wixom lifted his tiny songstress Emma next to her mother intoa rented horse and buggy and set Off for Austin, Nevada. They drove past Emma's birthplace, Alpha, near Washington, Nev. County. Emma was to achieve acclaim throughout the musical world and many years later was to dramatically return to Nevada City and to be the star at one of NC's most glamor-. ous social events. When Emma was 13 years old her mother died suddenly and Dr, Wixom, wanting the very best for his songbird, enrolledher in Mills College in Oakland. She graduated in 1876 and with a group of singing Mills students started a concert tour of Europe that failed, Emma remained in Europe, took voice lessons, and sent for her father. to manage her career. In 1880 she made her debut in London, and she later: sang leading roles in most of the Continental capitals. Her light lyric soprano actually was too small for opera, but was considered exquisite within its range. According to Millie'sColumn in the SF Chronicle, Emma's first performance in SF at the opera house in 1885 was received with sheer hysteria, It was obvious she possessed what in my time was to become known as “It" and "Oomph”,.. whatever it took. ..Emma had it. Women tottered on the brink of deep swoons and tears coursed down the cheeks of strong men and splashed into their beards. The singer was pelted with roses from the .audience while ushers rushed to the stage with dozens of elaborate floral designs. Completely overcome. Emma couldn 't manage a word, and finally collapsed on a chair made up of pink carnations and cried her heart out. What , a dame! How I've wished I might have known her. She appeared in Virginia City, Nevada, under similarly enthusiastic conditions where 2,000 miners cheered and cheered. In Reno the whole town lined the station just to see her private car pass by, Everywhere she wore a $100,000 diamond necklace, a gift she received from Queen Victoria after singing at thie English Court. On March 30, 1902 Emma Nevada came home: came home to the town from which she chose her name. The Nevada County Narrow Gauge RR ran an Emma Nevada special, The next night at the Nevada Theater Emma was to give her greatest concert. At the Narrow Gauge Depot -soon to fall in the path of the freewaythe town band played Home Sweet Home and Jim Colley, Howard Naffziger, and George Gaylord were around to answer her every whim, Rector Bros. gave Emma their red carpet treatment. Crowds appeared in front of the National. She appeared on the balcony the crowd roared and the band struck up Auld Lang Syne, Belle Tickell swamped her room at the National (Room 11) with flowers. Belle will be 100 years old in July. Minerva Marshall Snyder (Wright) was a guest of honor at Emma's National Hotel banquet. I was talking to Minerva the other day but I wouldn't dare ask her how old she was. But she's got more bounce than most of you readers, Emma found the Nevada Theater packed to the doors, Hundreds could not gain entrance. Jo V. Snyder, writing for another network, described the scene: “The center portiers part, a vision of sweet beauteous womanhood appears, lingering a brief moment as she holds the rich fold apart, a dark, warm frame to the picture the lark with a voice So a so. * “FLOWERS OF DISTINC ~ ee 8 1963 ©.
