State’s legislative limelight. The
proposal was to reorganize the

which would take care of 29, and
‘then give the remaining 11
senators to San Francisco and
Los Angeles, four each; and
Alameda County would get the
three remaining senators. This
‘stirred up a continuing controversy of considerable
magnitude.
During the month of March,
the County treasury was
enriched by $1,610 on account of
fines levied for violations of the
liquor laws.

night termed success
The Grass Valley Lions Club’s
first annual father and son night
was termed a Success. Over 30
sons, grandsons, fathers and
other guests were hosted by club
members at The Office last
Thursday evening.
The special program was Jim
McLennan, who told of his experiences as a drag-race driver
and owner of the Fremont Drag
Strip in the Bay Area. He
presented a movie titled ‘Match
Race”’ about the real life racing
between Don
Tom McEwen “The Mongoose”’
remains of a portion of the John Blasauff
_. Brewery.
Lyle White, a local historian, said that
Blasauff operated a brewery where
Leonard Holbrooke’s surplus store is
located on Spring Street in the late 1850s.
Holbrook and Frank Milne, who is
associated with him in Len’s Surplus,
speculated on whether the crumbling
rocks and bricks could be the remains of a
brewery, or possibly those of the oven area
for a long-forgotten bakery. .
In reference to the oven-like appearance of the debris White said
breweries also had “cooking
arrangements.”’ According to White, the
Dreyfus Brewery once was situated on a
nearby corner of South Pine and Spring
Streets. He said there also was a brewery
on Sacramento Street.
