This week fifty years ago Wed. April 11, 1973 The Nevada County Nugget 9 Baptists to host chorus Re-apportionment was in the State’s legislative limelight. The proposal was to reorganize the senatorial districts to give one senator to every two counties which would take care of 29, and ‘then give the remaining 11 senators to San Francisco and Los Angeles, four each; and Alameda County would get the three remaining senators. This ‘stirred up a continuing controversy of considerable magnitude. During the month of March, the County treasury was enriched by $1,610 on account of fines levied for violations of the liquor laws. Petitions requesting that the “name of Henry Ford be placed on the Primary ballot of the Progressive Party in Nebraska in 1924, for the position of President of the United States; were filed in Omaha. Lotta Crabtree, famed actress ” of the Gold Rush days and later, was reported near death in her Boston home. Lotta, then 77, had no known relatives and her fortune,:said to be $10 million dollars, was reported to have been willed to several charities. The last steel girder of the New Bear River bridge on highway 49 between Grass Valley and Auburn, was placed and the only job remaining to complete the structure was pouring the cement flooring of the bridge. The service is a cooperative program test with Standard Oil which will reimburse the State for gasoline provided to disabled vehicles. Motorists will be advised of Standard Oij1’s participation by a card presented to them at the time they are assisted. Lyle White, a local historian, said that Blasauff operated a brewery where Leonard Holbrooke’s surplus store is located on Spring Street in the late 1850s. Holbrook and Frank Milne, who is associated with him in Len’s Surplus, speculated on whether the crumbling rocks and bricks could be the remains of a brewery, or possibly those of the oven area for a long-forgotten bakery. . In reference to the oven-like appearance of the debris White said breweries also had “cooking arrangements.”’ According to White, the Dreyfus Brewery once was situated on a nearby corner of South Pine and Spring Streets.
