The Rough and Ready Grange annual spring “Open House" was
held Friday April 7th, They say there is a little "Ham” in everyone, This was proven by the “hanging” of Jack Bixler just for
being “accused of lying to his wife". And by the removal of
money from Charles Deardorf"s pockets with a vacumn cleaner,
The wives, Esther Bixler and Clara Deardorf, got into the act,
too, trying to establish how many faucets to put on a cow.
Gunnar Williams and Rosa and Bryan Christensen were involved
in some mighty “hamie" procedures at the movie theater, Music
for the more serious part of the program was provided by Mesdames Edith Williams, Violet Hawson, and Olyve Simmons,
Others participating in the "Grange Foundation” Tableaux were
Mrs, Marguerite Abbott and Mrs, Mary Moneta, Russell Abbott,
Jack Bixler and Bryan Christensen were Stage Hands, The program was guided by Grange Lecturer Fay Dunbar.
Food, as usual, was excellent, Gtests were from as far away
as Orangevale, Prizes were won by young Bruce Harwood and
Ronny Peterson,
The Ladies of the Grange were pleased with the success of the
first Rummage Sale held in their own hall, . It was comfortable
and pleasant for everyone in spite of the rain. The ladies will
hold their regular HEC meeting on Tuesday, April 18th starting
at 12:00 noon, with a Dessert Luncheon at the home of ‘Esther

There will be a pene at membership meeting of the Rough and
Ready Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, April 13th at 7:30
p.m, at the eres Hall, The County Chamber's "Fair Share
Plan" will be the first item of business, The main order of business will be “Secession Days”. They are here! Rough and Ready
seceded from the Union on April 7, 1850, History does repeat
‘tself,. Their principal "beef" was “taxation without (proper)
epresentation" and without adequate services "even as you and
". Here they were, miles from any central government, not
sven a state yet (Sept. 9, 1850) and being taxed even to be
narried and buried, To top it all off they had to go to Marysville
x Nevada City to get the job done, .In 1850 (before telephones
and automobiles) this was no small chore, So, they formed their
own government; no taxes, vigilantes for more law and order and
their own court, all-on April 7, 1850. Not such a bad idea! It
did prove impractical however and only lasted until July 4, 1850,
