Forest Fire
Loss In '59
“From every aspect, 1959
was the worst fire year since
the mid-1920s. Rainfall was
below normal, the late
spring, all of summer and
fall were constantly hot and
dry. Winds were unusual.
Though we could give many
statistics on this fire season,
had 126 fires which burned
over 32,621 acres. We had

75 man-caused fires last
year, compared with a fiveyear average of 53.”
So stated Henry E. Branagh, forest supervisor of
Tahoe Naitonal Forest, this
week, in his annual activity
report.
However, in spite of the
fire, Branagh said: “We
were able to cut 62 millfon
feet of green ‘timber valued
at $1,088,000.”
At the same time, recreation use of the forest con; tinued its steady rise with,
an increase over 1958 of 10
per cent in all categories except winter sports, which
increase some 30 per cent.
The stimulus of the OlymPic Games at Squaw Valley
probably accounts for the
increased winter sports activity. :
It is estimated that 502,400
persons enjoyed the forest
recreation facilities, spending 964,000 man days in the
area. In addition, some three
and a half million persons
traveled the _ highways
which traverse the forest.
“In addition,” Branagh
said, “we tcok on the herculean task of appraising,
marking, selling and cutting
of 20 million feet of timber
salvage from the Cold Creek
burn. The sale value of this
burned timber was $118,000.
The absence of fall rain and
snow at least allowed us to
complete this essential job.
“Following the _ timber
harvesters on this burn areg'
were seed spotters who’
planted 230 acres of Ponr
derosa pine seed, Other erosion and soil stabilization
measures were taken in conjunction with the timber
cutting. Further plans have
been made. for extensive
planting in this burn area
this spring just as soon as
the snow leaves the ground.
“Immediately following
the Mountain House fire’ at
Camptonville, salvage appraisers moved into the areg
and gathered all the data
necessary to sell and remove
the 100 million feet of
burned saw timber. Twelve
sales are benig made in the
area in sufficient time to
permit harvesting whieh
