8 The Nevada County Nugget, Wednesday, April 14, 1971 County to check Spenceville road status County counsel's. office will investigate the status of Spenceville road which could provide direct access to and from Beale Air Force Base, its 6,000 personnel and $50 million annual payroll, Supervisors this week suggested the study after Chairman Dean Lawrence called attention to a picture in The Union of March.31 which showed the gate on the Spenceville Road padlocked. The Union's story said that 18 months ago three county staffers claimed the Spenceville road was “opened" by a superior court ruling. The pictures and artiAG 1/2-mile section of State Highway 20 east of Nevada City has been officially designated as a portion of state scenic highway following a request by the Nevada County Board of Supervisors. The section of highway lies within Tahoe National Forest at an elevation of about 5,000 feet, Rt extends east from. Skillman Flat: Campercena, -past the cle posed the question whether the road is physically open to the public. Supervisors appeared uncertain as to the status of the road, There were conflicting ideas expressed but no supervisor appeared certain of action pertaining to opening the road. The board in the past year has been in the process of acquiring rights of way to open Perimeter road in the southern portion of the county. This road leads to the Camp.Far West reservoir and a junction with Placer and Yuba county roads, One supervisor believed that the board has not issued an Alpha-Omega vista point to. Lowell Hill Road. Within a few weeks it will be marked with colorful orange and blue signs picturing the California poppy. Highway 20 in Nevada county is in Supervisorial Districts 1 and 2. Mrs, Dean Lawrence, chairman of the Board of Supervisors represents District 2 and Ralph Buchanan, vice chairman of the Board of Supervisors, represents District 1. The new scenic highway section is order to physically open spenceville road. Another said that the superior court ruling applied to only a portion of the road. Bishop said he was not certain which gates were pictured in relationship to Spenceville road, and suggested the next step in determination of the status rests with the board. Spenceville is a public service road, Supervisor Larry Filer said. He asked the procedure to take it into the county road system, Bishop thought he recalled that the court ruled that the road came from a common Buchanan's district. Most of Route 20 follows the old Bear Valley emigrant road along Washington Ridge. It is flanked on both sides by varieties ofpine trees which arch over
