aid drug fight
The Nevada County Leputy
Sheriffs' Association is sponsoring its second annual circus
to benefit the county drug abuse
program.
The Gatti Charles circus
will be held June 7 at Nevada
County Fairgrounds. Tickets are
available through any deputy
sheriff or by calling Don
Schmidt, chairman of the Drug
Abuse Committee.
Profits from last year's circus were used to buy educational materials which have been
used and are still being used
by deputies on visits to elementary schools of the county.
The deputies feel the children
will have a better understanding
of a law enforcement officer's
job and more respect for him
through these visits. Depending
upon the age of the students
they also are taught about the
problems of drug abuse.

Modern floor company business
backs circus to The Empire
Floor Co.
When ancient man entered his
cave or mud hut, he walked on
dry dust or through gooey mud.
With the evolution of man and
his habitation through the centuries came the inevitable development of ‘‘floor coverings’’,
to insure greater comfort, con.
venience and status, From the
use of tree leaves and bark,
woven reeds for ferns, animal #
skins and fur came the classic §
art of carpet. weaving. ..
which has grown into one of to;
day’s most sophisticated industries.
One of the first things the
observant person notes upon entering a home today.. beyond
its architectural design and surroundings. . . is the interior decor; and, furnishings in general. fF
Floor coverings play a big part
in ‘‘explaining’’ the personality
of the resident. . .and, in most
cases, making the visitor feelat
ease,
The coordination ofthose floor ~
coverings and the draperies also
contributes to that important
‘‘first impression’.. at this
point in completing one’s home,
the expertise of a reliable dealer in these basics is all-important,
Home owners and prospective
home buyers in Western Nevada
County are fortunate in being
able to consult with and buy from
the Empire Floor Company; out
on the Grass Valley Nevada
City Highway, near Yuba River
Lumber Co.
Here, in the comfort of a modern and most attractive business establishment, one may
spend all the time necessary to
select the desired and proper
coverings for every floor in the
home. . .plus coordinateddraperies and allied. accessories,
Owners and proprietors of
Empire Floor Company are Roy
and Evelyn Snethen, who opened
the doors of their business here
in January of 1965, Roy had
previously enjoyed some 20
years association in flooring
businesses in the BayArea prior
to coming to Nevada County.
A visit to the display rooms at
Empire is a walk into a wonderland of color and exquisite design, . .breathtakingly beautiful

to behold. Any selection of floor
coverings and accessories admittedly takes time to make..
and it should, to insure satisfaction and enjoyment. The
buyer is assured of a cordial
welcome, and the opportunity for
leisurely inspection of the wide
range of stock onhand, . .or perusal of sample books.
The Snethens are experienced
interior decoration consultants,
and derive much pleasure in assisting their customers in making the ‘‘just right” choice for
any room in their homes,
Among the distinguished brand
names represented in their current stock are Congoleum, Lee,
Alexander Smith, Hollytex, Milliken, Venture, Viking, Armstrong, Glenoit, Charter, Roth
and Lake Crest,
“Price range’ is always an
interesting factor in selecting
floor coverings and draperies
‘,, at Empire one may pay a
modest $7.95 per square yard for
a Dupont nylon with pad, installed; or indulge in a fancy
for a luxurious example of the
weaver’s art, in a stunning wool
at $26.95 per square yard, with
pad and installed, . .certainly
providing ‘‘something for everyone and his pocketbook!”’
The Snethens have made a
meaningful contribution to the
community in their interest in
civic affirs, They belong to the
Chamber of-Commerce; Roy isa
member of the Elks, Builders
y some of their
(
Exchange of Nevada County,
and has served as a member of
the Gold Flat Volunteer Fire
Department for several years.
Evelyn, who is also aregistered
nurse and housewife, is actively
associated in the business. The .
family belongs to United Methodist Church,
The couple have three children; Phillip . . .a graduate of
NUHS with the class of 1967,
is married and lives in Alhambra; Marcia, who was graduated from the same school in1968,
is married and lives in Grass
Valley and is the mother of an
adorable 11-month old daughter;
and Randy who will be graduated from NUHS this June, and
who lives at home,
