Penn Valley News
By ELSIE DILLBERG
If the old saying about the
April showers bringing the May
flowers is true, then we are
going to have some lovely May
flowers. The rain of the past
week was most refreshing and
I do hope that we will get some
more before the month is out.
Last Sunday, I had my firstencounter with a Great Dane.
I have seen them from a.distance, but never close enough
to touch. We had taken a short
ride down the road to Smartville and saw a sign advertising mini dachshunds for sale.
Being Dachshund lovers we followed the sign. The people not
only have the puppies for sale
but the huge Great Dane, Bruce
met us as we got out of the
car. The man told us that Bruce
_ eats. about five to six pounds
of food per day. The Dane is a
massive but beautiful dog.
Grace Pedigo of Devonshire
Downs has recently received
a letter from the President of
Sierra College, congratulating
her for receiving a 4.0 grade
point average for the fall semester of 1971. Only 45 students
out of the 3,100 in the student
body have equalled her accomplishment. That is indeed an
honor.
Penn Valley has an extra nice
paper carrier in the person of
Boyd Newman, our Union carrier. He not only saved each
day's paper for us while we
were away over Easter week,
but he went out of his way to
deliver -them early one morning following our arrival home.
I call that service. Both Royd
and Margaret are really swell
people.
Tom and Eva Hill left our
community last Friday afternoon, The moving van came
early in the morning and by
late afternoon the men had loaded everything from the house.
Thelma Darr, Eva's sister from
Silverton, Oregon was here for
the past two weeks helping Eva
and Tom with the last minute
moving details. Thelma drove
one of the Hill's cars to Klamath Falls for Tom, as Lva
doesn't drive. Going to miss
these nice people,
Tom and Carol Cox and son
Ron spent a few days of Easter
week in Morro Bay visiting their
older son Tommy. While there
they helped Tommy celebrate
his 21st birthday. The Cox's
jJaughter and son-in-law Donna
and Ed Smith from Marina were
also on hand for the birthday
celebration. Carol says “that
granddaughter Shannon. is really growing.
Weekend guests for Tom and
Carol this past weekend were
Tom's sister and husband, Mr.
and Mrs. Robert Thrun from
Eureka.
The Bowens, Ron and Norma,
are really ambitious people.
Drove by their place the other
day and they are giving their
jouse a new paint job. Feally
looks great.
Everyone at the Dillberg house
managed to have a few days
off at the same time during
Easter week so we loaded the
bus and took off for’ Atascadero
to visit my sister, Herta Shafer. We got as far as the Milk
Farm on Highway 80 and unbelievable as it sounds, the
engine in our new Volkswagen
bus blew up. A great start for
the first vacation in four years.
We had to be towed backward
up the freeway to the A. E.
Harter Volkswagen Center in
Davis. This was about 5:30 Monday afternoon. These nice folks
at Harter Volkswagen diagnosed
the trouble right away, saw to
it that we got a car to drive
home and started working on
our car the following morning
at 7 a.m. By 5 that Tuesday afternoon, we were on our way.
We visited friends Bob and Carol
Jones in Richmond that evening
and left Richmond early the next
morning, going down the Coast
Highway 1, so the kids could
see the ocean. Youngest™son
Court was amazed that the ocean
was so big, he saw it for the
first time. We spent a day atthe
beach at Cayucos where thekids
found sand crabs and shells and
of course had to see how wet
they could get before they asked
if they could go swimming in
the ocean. The weather was
beautiful and aside from the inconvenience ofthe engine trouble
we had a lovely time. A big
thanks to the friends who babysat with our animals, Pocahontas, the pony spent the time
with the Frank Foster family;
Pebbles, the dog, was lovingly
cared for by Nora and Percy
Langlois and Pinky and Homer;
the white rats were taken in by
the Al Vincent Family. We thank
them all.
