Hartman Gets Democratic Nod
For Hennessy’s Supervisor Seat
Nevada. County Democratic
Central Committee, meeting in
specail session Monday night in
the supervisors chambers at the
courthouse nominated Lou Hartman ofGrass Valley as its choice
for recomendation to the governor
to appointment to the Third
District Supervisorial seat in the
county.
The special session was called
to interview four candidates who
had applied for the seat left vacant by the resignation of Supervisor Neil Hennessy. Hennessy's
resignation becomes effective
April 30,
Called before the committee for
interviews were Hartman, a Grass
Valley automobile dealer, Grass
Valley merchant Fred Conway,
Nevada City sculpture and metal
worker Norman Grag and retired
engineer Richard Wilson of Nevada City,
Hartman received the nod of the

While there are some interior
improvements being contemplated, Casey said the Miners
Hospital building has been carefully inspected and was found to
be structurally sound, No expansion is planned, he said.

management and will allow the

As the 10th anniversary celebration of the first African-Asian
Bandung Conference began in
INDONESIA, U. S. Presidential
envoy Ellsworth Bunker ended his
mission with the promise to withdraw the Peace Corps, one of the
last U. S. agencies left in Indonesia. The 3-day observance of
the anniversary of the first conference, which came out against
racism and colonialism, was attended by 36 of 60 African and
Asian countries invited, Indonesian President Sukarno was said
to be seeking to coordinate efforts to drive Western powers out
of Southeast Asia,

Ready Springs Voters
Approve Bond Issue
And State Loan
Voters in the Ready Spring Union
School District Tuesday approved
a $45,000 bond issue and a state
apportionment of $197,000 for
expansion of the school plant in
Penn Valley,
The vote on the proposal to issue
$45,000 in bonds was 193 to 66
and the vote to accept the state
loan of $197,000 was 175 to 67,
The residents recently voted to
remove the’ district from the
Nevada Union Sunior High System
andreturn the seventh and eighth
grade students to Ready Springs,
The proposed building program
is being undertaken to make room
for the seventh and eighth graders
and the continually growing enrollment in other grades.

Returned To Office

after a race with three other
candidates, Parker Stortz who
had been touted as a gaint killer
in some areas really only pulled
in his own district of Clear Creek
where he polled 30 v otes
All four incumbents on the
Sierra Junior College Board were
returned to office, Richard Lee
received 2, 355 votes for the Area’
1 seat, Hal Welch pulled 2,252
in Area 2, George Duff was reelection in the only real contest
by 76 votes over Erwin Stark and
Dr, Robert Ross received 2,544.
With two seats vacant on the
county school board from Area 1,
Jean Roese was elected and Dr.
Robert Hume won the second seat
