Freeway
Work Starts
Construction has started on two
interchanges on Interstate 80 in
Placer County at Heather Glen
andIllinoistown, 9 and 13 miles,
respectively, northeast of Aubum.
State highway officials at the
Marysville district office asked
motorists to drive with caution in
the vicinity and watch for signs
and flagmen w arning of heavy
equipment crossing the travelled
way.
Later on, as work progresses,
one lane on the four-lane expressway may be closed forshort
periods during work hours to
permit excavation for bridge
structures, There will be no restriction on weekerids and legal
holidays.
Completion is anticipated early
next year, depending on the
weather.
Overhead structures w ili carry
county roads over the highway at
both locations with on and offramps. This will eliminate grade
crossings from south of Heather
Glen to Colfax converting this~
six-mile section to full freeway.
Contractor forthe $860,000
projectis Lee Stephens of Stockton, Resident engineer for the
state is Arthur Nelson of Yuba
City. DonJ. Ohman of Citrus
Heights is bridge department
representative
There still remains about eight
miles northeast of Aubum to be
converted to freeway standards by
construction of several more
interchanges. The rest of I-80
from the American River in
Sacramentotothe Nevada line is
now full freeway.
California Beef Prospects Good
‘Climate, superior management, good financing facilities,
and beef-eating Californians will
all contribute to the continued
success of the state's cattle feeding industry, now the third largest
inthenation, according to a 58page report, “Cattle Feeding in
California, " just completed by
Bank of America.
The study, published by the
bank's Economic Research department and written by Dr. John
A. Hopkin, vice president, Agribusiness, and Dr. Robert C.
Kramer, director of the Agricultural Marketing and Utilization
Center, Michigan State University, predicts atrend to larger
feed lots concentrated principally
in the San Joaquin, Imperialand
Sacramento valleys.
Thereport also analyses in detail the industry's feed resource
base, use of feeder and stocker
cattle, investment and cost structure, comparison with out-ofstate areas, freight rates, California market for beef, risks in
cattle feeding, and financing. It
is being distributed primarily to
members of the state's cattle
feeding and allied industries,
Already the nation's top beefeating state, California's per
capita consumption of beef will
continue to increase and provide
a market for the packing and
cattle -feeding industries, the report predicts, In addition, the
feed lots of the state are favored
by other factors, including a naturally warm, dry climate; a
propensity toward efficient, wellmanaged large=scale.operations, +
and good financing sources with
traditions of agricultural lending
to finance future improvements
and expansion.
Itis expected, according to the
Bank of America study, that the
number of feed lots in the state
will decrease, but that feed-lot
capacity will remain about the
same. There will continue to be

shifts away from the coastal
centers of population into the
central valleys, with the San
Joaquin Valley showing the greatest gain, followed by the Imperial
and Sacramento valleys.
By 1975, it predicts, California
per capita consumption of beef
will reach about 137 pounds,
comparedto 126 pounds per person in 1963. This will mean that
five and one half million head of
cattle must be slaughtered an-nually to supply the California
market by that time. California
cattle feeders should be able to
supply 48 percent of this number,
or 2.64 million head, an increase
of 39 per cent over 1963. Only
59 per cent of October 1964 feed
Barretts
fifth
lot capacity would have to be
used to supply this number, based
on a feeding period of 140 days.
California cattle feeders, it
‘points out, are increasingly depending on sources outside the
state .
