Life In The Outdoors New Camping Sites To Be Opened Soon More than 170 camping and 120 picnic units will be open to the public this season in the Sierra and Cascade mountains on lands owned by Pacific Gas and Electric Company, according to Shermer L. Sibley, PG&E president. The facilities, provided by the company asa public-service, are at 30 different locations on PG&E watershed lands, Water stored on these lands for electric power generation also is used for domestic and agricultural purposes after release through the company's power plants, Sibley said. An additional 20 camping and 16 picnic units will be opened at four locations by August 1 as part of PG&E's continuing recreation and conservation program, This will bring the total number of units to 326. "Public use of PG&E properties for recreation purposes on a firstcome, first-served basis has been a long-standing policy of the company, subject to local fire, sanitation and safety regulations," Sibley said. Public access to the PG&E campgrounds will be practicable about May 1at the following locations: Facilities at Lake Spaulding, Nevada County, twoand one half miles west of the junction of State 20 and Interstate 80, including nine camp units, will be opened as soon as mountain snows Clear. By August 1, PG&E expects to have 19 camping units available to the public. Winter snows will alto. prevent public use of PG&E's eight unit Lake Van Norden Campground, south of Soda Springs in Nevada County via Interstate 80, prior to July 1. A total of 10 camp units at PG&E's Lodgepole Campground, below Lake Valley dam on the north fork of the American River two miles south of Yuba Gap, in Placer County, on Interstate 80, is expected to be open August 1. High country snows will probably prevent public access to PG&E's 20 camp units at Silver Lake in Amador County on State 88, and the 25 unit campground on Upper Blue Lake in Alpine County, 15 miles south of Hope Valley via State 88, until July 1. Lake Macumber, four miles northwest of Viola on State Highway 44, in Shasta County seven camp units. Lake Almanor, Rocky Point, one mile north of Lake Almanor
dam on State 89 in Plumas County, 20 camp units; Last Chance Creek, four miles north of Chester via county roads, 25 unit campground; Yellow Creek, 10 miles southwest of Lake Almanor via State 89 and Humbug Road, five camp units.
