__ (EDITOR'S NOTE; The Nugget carried an historically important series of articles in
1951 titled "100 Years of
Nevada County." Thes vignettes
of our Golden Empire then were
compiled into a book, only a few
of which remain today. Because
~ of local interest in things historical, the Nugget has been and
will continue to republish these
articles in ensuing weeks and
encourages its readers to clip
the stories and keep them for
future fteference and recollection.)
The leading gold mines in
California are located in and
around Grass Valley. Prior to
the war, the mines of this district produced $11,000,000 annually in gold.
The Empire mine is the oldest
mine in continuous operation in
the U.S., having operated without
a shut-down since 1850 except
for the period from October 6,
1942, to July 1, 1946, when the
mine Was closed in compliance
with U. S, government order
2208, The Empire mine was originally located by George D.
Roberts in October 1850, When
Woodbury, Park, and others
enlarged their holdings by purchasing the Ophir Hill Claims
in 1851, they named the mine
"Empire" and this name hasremained for 100 years and has
been a household word in every
mining camp'the world over for
industry most of century
the past half century.. Today this
mine has over 190 miles of underground tunnels, the most
modern mining machinery, and
under normal operation produces 100,000 ounces of gold
annually.
The North Star and Eureka
imines were discovered in 1851.
The North Star, now part of the
Empire Mines, has one of the
deepest shafts in the world,
down 11,008 feet on the pitch
of the ledge. The Eureka, later
known as the Idaho and today
known as the Jdaho-Maryland
has come through a turbulent
existence to become second only
to the Homestake Mines in South
Dakota in the amount of gold .
production.
