ENE scsi eaPwt Sf i Job Push For Minorities State Employment Director Albert B. Tieburg this month cited the recent finding of appropriate jobs for two college educated Négro Olympic runners and a Mexican-American sculptor as striking examples of the success of the Department of Employ.ment'snew minority groups pro— gram. . Otis C. Davis, a gold medal winner at the 1960 Rome Olympics and a one-time 440-yarddash world record holder, with a B.A. degree in physical education, was working at odd jobs until the California State Employ mént Service minority specialist found him a job as a physical education teacher with the California Youth Authority at $7,500 a year. Adolph Plummer, just ten semester hours short of a B.A. in physical education, and current holder of the 440 world record, was working off and on at odd jobs until the Employment Service minority specialist referred him to the Catholic Youth Organization, which hired him asa fulltime playground director. A Mexican-American, long unemployed and always underemployed, with three years of art institute and college training in ceramics, commerical art and metal casting, was placed with an advertising display, company and isnow earning $4.50 an hour as a sculptor. A large oil refinery seeking to integrate its technical work force forthree months had been interviewing minority applicants without finding one to meet requirements. The Department's assis~tance finally was requested, with a three-day limit, to find two men the employer failed to find in three months, With the help of the minority specialist, the order was filled in two days. Encourgged by experiences like these, Tieburg said, the State Employment Service this week will start the final phase of advanced training of specialists to deal with employment problems of minority applicants at all local offices throughout the state. aa The center diamond of every Keepsake engagement ring is guaran’ perfect (or replacement _assured).
