Six of the seven matches were_
completed, the Miners were six
up and his number two player,
Truman Denio and number five, _
Coy Miller, were combining to .
-win the final set of the day.
The doubles set was no contest
but Immel watched with eaglelike eyes knowing that the
Miners had another 7-0 sweep.
“Did you know that today is
-my 100th victory,” Immel said
to Oakmont coach Jack McKee.
“Congratulations coach,’’
replied McKee. ‘“‘Now why don’t
you retire”! McKee said.Retirement for Immel might .
be the key word for the rest of —
the Sierra Foothill League
which Nevada Union has
dominated in tennis the past 54
years. Nevada Union has won
five of six championships and
appeared headed for another.
Last season the Miners had a 39by a strong Del Oro squad.
For Immel it has been a .
fantastic coaching record. The
Miners have won 100 and lost sixduring his reign and . times
Nevada Union could well be
known as the tennis kings of high
school sports.
. “There, did you see that,”
Immel said. ‘‘Truman isn’t
using that overhead shot the
way he’s supposed to. He can’t
hit that overhead. eS
“We got some good material
coming up, we’re going to be
strong for four more years,”
Immel said. ‘Coy Miller is going
to be hard pushed to hang-on to
/ that number five spot.’’
“Look at that shot by Coy will
you, he’s playing better today,”
Immel said as Miller ended the
“doubles match and Nevada
Union had a 7-0 win.
“Atta boy Coy, you looked
better today, you did all right,”
the coach said as Miller walked
off the court.
Tomorrow is Roseville, “If we
get by them we've got the SFL
championship in the bag,”’
Immel commented. Roseville is
undefeated in league play but as
usual the Miners are considered
the much stronger team.
“Hey coach, I see the
. Sacramento paper ranked the
high school tennis teams in
northern California today and
tioned,”” someone commented.
Rio Americano was first, Davis
: second, Jesuit and Marysville
were in there — but not Nevada

NEVADA UNION tennis coach Warren immel recorded
his 100th coaching victory Friday.
Union. ;
“You can put this in your
writeup,” Immel said. ‘We beat .
Marysville 7-0 and that should
tell you something. Something is
screwy, I’m going to tell those
guys from Sacramento tonight.”
Immel said Nevada Union
could wipe out some of the
ranked teams, referring to
Marysville, Jesuit and Yuba
City. He did say that Rio
Americano with Dick Metz
playing number one deserved
‘the top spot. Metz is considered
the best high school player in
northern California.
What’s behind a coach with a
100-6 record?
“TI mostly leave the kids alone
and I let them play a lot,” said
Immel.
His theory is to put them on
the court and let them play.
Immel doesn’t go for the flashy
stuff on the court and emphasizes_ consistent play.
‘Double faults will kill you,” he
' Nevada Union wasn’t mensays. After that first shot my
players put the ball in there and
play the game. The kids have
the talent and I just want them
to use it in the right way.
Immel noted that discipline is
a must — “you can’t have a kid
telling a coach what to do,” he
states. “I like a kid to be conTHINK!

fident and cocky but you have to
draw the line somewhere.”’ —
Immel said this year’s team
has even balance, “It’s a nice
group to work with,” he said.
Mark Ingram is number one,
followed by Denio, Terry Witt,
Jeff Bousfield and Miller.
Ingram and Denio are juniors,
Miller is a sophomore and thereare three more good prospects
which gives Nevada Union
tennis fans several more years
to look forward to.
Ranking or no ranking, the
Nevada Union record of five
championships, 100 wins and
only six losses in the past six
seasons, is one that has to be
considered a remarkable
sporting feat. And the man
behind it is Warren Immel who
is now going after his second 100
victories. —
