ALLAN HALEY WINS
MERIT SCHOLARSHIP
MALAKOFF IN PROGRAM
SACRAMENTO --The proposed Malakoff State Park
and the existing Donner State
Park are both included in the
newly developed five-year
program of needs prepared.
by the California Division of
Beaches and Parks under the
Department of Parks and
Recreation.
Charles A.DeTurk,
director of the Department
of Parks andRecreation, this
week released the revised
five-year program along with
information on the $150, 000
recreational bond issue that
will appear onthe June 5
ballot.
DeTurk emphasized that
the revised program of needs
was made necessary because
of private acquisitions of
property originaily intended
to be used for recreational
purposes,
He noted that the Nevada
County NUGGET was one of
35 newspapers in the state
calling for an accelerated
park acquisition and development program,
The statewide bond issue
would provide $95 million
for the purchase and development of property under the
Department ofParks and
Recreation, with sites to be
approved by the legislature.
Another $45 million would
be available to counties in
the state, ona population
basis, for the development
of regional recreational
facilities,
The remaining $10 million
would be split between small
craft harbor development
and wildlife conservation
board reports,
Of the park funds, minimum expenditures would be
established for northern and
southern California projects,
with the funds above minimum available on a statewide basis.

Malakoff is programmed
asa7600 acre park, 5066 of
which are.now public land.
Estimated cost of acquisition
and development is $2.5
million, plus an estimated
$350,000 for 100 camp units,
Donner is scheduled to
pick up 45 additional private
acres at a cost including
development of $100, 000
with another $400,000 set
in the program for an additional 200 camp units.
Totalcost for acquisition
and development under the
five-year program is $163
million.
Malakoff is scheduled as
one of 24 new projectsinthe
northern 37 counties. Its
7600 acres is nearly ten per
cent of the total acreage
proposed for acquisition in
the Northern California area
for new projects, but it will
be bought and developed at
-a cost of less than ten per
cent of the area's total proposed development budget.
In size, the Malakoff State
Park is the fifth largest proposed among northern California's program. It is exceeded in size by Mount
St. Helena in Napa County
(8,900 acres); Aptos Forest
in Santa Cruz County (9,500
acres); Bodie in Mono
County (11,375 acres); and
Bull Creek in Humboldt
County (19,000 acres).
In Southern California,
several park proposals dwarf
the Malakoff. Included are
Cima Dome in San Bernardino County (28,000 acres);
Mitchell Cavern-Providence
Mountains in San Bernardino
County (25,000 Acres);
W hipple Mountain in San
Bernardino County (183, 000
acres); Topoc Gorge in San
Bernardino County (20, 294
acres); Cuien Sabe in Riverside County (9,350 acres);
Alabama Hills inInyo
County -(23,746 acres); and
