SAN FRANCISCO --Approximately 150 air tankers and
pilots are being inspected
this week at Chino, Fresno,
and Redding airfields by
U.S, Forest Service and
California Division of Forestry inspectors,
The inspection will stress
safety and readiness. as well
as normal performance specifications. Only airplane
operators whose planes and
pilots pass the rigid inspection will be eligible to bid
on contracts for use of their
ships during the coming fire
season, according toRegional Forester Chas. A. Connaughton,
The 150 air tankers now in
California are more than can
be used effectively by the
fire agencies. Only about
50 air tankers and pilots will
actually be contracted for
during the 1962 fire season.
Contracts will be awarded on
a competitive bid basis.
Nearly half of the contracted
air tankers will be in the
initial attack category with
minimum standby guarantees and the other half will
bé available as reinforcement with no guarantees,
New detailed fire plans
have been developed which
outline the bases where air
tankers will be placed to provide the best statewide
coverage.

SAFE,..Before people hereabouts become to sad over
the reported fate of the owners of the Osborn-Woods art
studio, we hasten to point out that it is paintings that
are going "to be hung for the Auburn (art) show... And
while pointing to the errors of others, we should admit
it was our own error that allowed Lawn-Boy mowers to
be advertised for $00.00

LEFT OVER FREEWAY...F. W. Tarr, chairman of the
California State Chamber of Commerce's statewide
highway committee recently reported that local community approval is required for freeway construction, and
said that “many complex factors are involved in freeway
route selection"...He continued: "The final route is
adopted by the (Highway) Commission only after careful
consideration of all information presented at public
hearings.” An agreement between the local governing
body and the state, required by California law, gives
local agencies a voice in location and type of interete street adjustments, and traffic separation structures"...We can footnote Tarr's assertion with the fact
that in all three local agencies in Nevada County. .when
the Division of Highways brough in a revised freeway
map and agreement it was given only cursory treatment
before immediate adoption by the local authorities.
Only two ofthe 15 governing body members asked questions regarding location and type of interchanges, street
adjustments, or traffic separation structures. . . Supervisor
Neil Hennessy and Grass Valley Councilman Leonard
Prisk. And only two voted against immediate adoption,
to allow time for consideration and investigation. . . Supervisor Hennessy and Nevada City Councilman Craig
Davies...In Nevada County, chairman Tarr, the local
voice was weak,

THE PASSING PARADE, ... Among those who died in the
first three months of this year was a San Franciscan matton who was noted for her fashion consciousness. She is
buried in Grass Valley....The woman was Glendolyn
Clifford Bechhold, widow of the late Errol MacBoyle.
Mr. MacBoyle was aman of culture, a graduate of Columbia University and the UC School of Mines. He was
at one time a tennis champion. But when he came to
Grass Valley to begin his career, Mr. Macboyle began
his work as a lowly paid employe of the Idaho-Maryland
Gold Mining Company. Eventually he owned a major
share of the company. ...Glendolyn MacBoyle (in those
days) began her wedded life in a shack with a corrugated
iron roof and with few conveniences. Later she and her
husband lived in a large Washington’St. apartment in
San Francisco, It was an apartment boasting <g old
leaf ceilings, fine furniture and antique Irish Waterford
glass.
The MacBoyles entertained on Washington St. and at
the historic Fountain Grove Vinyards near Santa Rosa
which they had acquired in 1937... It was alsowhile
-"Glen" was married to her first husband that she became
known in San Francisco for her beautiful furs---ranging
from full length mink coats to sumptious stoles---and
for her jewelry, unusual and valuable. ...For many years
Mrs. MacBoyle was a trustee of the Palace of the Legion of
Honor, It was there-that Mrs. MacBoyle's jewelry made
a major contribution to one showing. As part of the
display was her "Gibraltar-sized" aquamarines---necklace, brooch, bracelet, rings, and more---and numerous large rare topazes, set in gold with blazing diamonds,
