PONDEROSA SENIOR CITIZENS Mr.Carl Larsen was elected to serve as President of the Ponderosa Senior Citizens for the coming year when they met on April 20.Margie Aitken, Vice-President;Imogene O'Neil, Secretary; Betty Anderson, Treasurer; and Bertha Woods, 3 year Trustee, will assist Mr. Larsen. The next luncheon meeting will be held at 12:15 p.m., April -27,. at the Veterans' Memorial Hall in Nevada City. It will honor all members having birthdays in April. Members are reminded to bring table service and sandwich. The food committee will serve birthday cake,ice cream, coffee and tea. President Carl Larsen will preside over a short business meeting followed by games andcards. Anyone fifty or overis welcome to attend. PAST PRESIDENTS ASSOCIATION NO. 6 The Past Presidents Association No. 6, Native Daughters of the Golden West, will meet at 8:00 p.m., April 28th, inthe recreation hall of the Methodist Church of Nevada City. The tablecloths will be displayed at this meeting. Members are urged to bring their ticket books. The State Assembly will meet in San Mateo from April 28 through 30. HildaSandow, Florence Elliott and Bessie Rush have been chosen as delegates. Refreshments will be served following the meeting by Mae Norton, Phyllis Butz and Fannie Eden. GRASS VALLEY SOROPTIMISTS Announcement was made during: last Thursday's meeting of the Grass Valley Soroptimists that plans ard are being finalized for the annual May Day Buffet, the one special annual event of the Club which is anticipated by all members and guests who have attended in previous years. This year the Empire Hotel of Grass Valley has been chosen as the locale; the festivities will begin at 6:00 p.m. until (?), on Tuesday, May 9. There will be many fine -prizes given throughout the evening. Mrs.Audrey Mc Burney is chairman of the buffet. Proceeds derived from the sale of tickets willbe used on community prejects as in the past. Further information as to the sale of tickets and arrangements will be announced at a later date. LOCAL ARTISTS IN ART AUCTION Robert Gilberg and Beverly Hackett, both of Nevada City, and George Mathis, formerly of Nevada City, now of Coloma, will have their art work on display and auctioned off atanauction to be held April 28 and 29 atthe Arden Hill Swim and Tennis Club, 1315 MissionAvenue, Sacramento. This Art Auction is being sponsored by the Women's Association of Sacramento's educational television station KVIE. All proceeds derived from the auction will go.to benefit Channel 6, the area's nonprofit communityowned television station. Included inthe auction will be batiks, watercolors, oils ,
sculpture,jewelry, prints and pots, representing the work of at leasta hundred Norther nCalifornia artists. Mrs. Ruth Hyatt, shown busily engaged in her duties as ticket chairman for the Annual Spring . Luncheon sponsored by the Women's Society of Christian Service of the Grass Valley First Methodist Church last Thursday in Wesley Hall. . Methodist Spring Luncheon Approximately 180 were delighted with the artistically decorated tables; each year the nine Circles of the Women's group enter into a friendly competition for the most colorful and outstanding table decor in keeping with the year's theme. An equally delightful luncheon was served by Mrs. Thelma Gates and her committee. The stage setting -was beautifully decorated by Mrs. Edna Koster and Mrs. Bernice Schoellerman. The entire program in song was presented by the Boys' Ensemble and Girls' Ensemble of Nevada Union High School under the capable direction of Mr. Don Baggett. Much of the credit for the success of this event goes to the co-chairmen, Mrs. Esther Harris and Mrs. Naomi.Youngman. The Society's President, Mrs. Yvonne Nelson, has stated that next year's luncheon will most likely be scheduled for May, to avoid the possibility of unpredictable April weather. "Flowers ahd Frills" was the theme carried out on the beautifully and artistically decorated tables at the Annual Spring Luncheon held in Wesley Hall of the First Methodist Church, Grass Valley. Shown welcoming Dr. Marion Ballin, center, guest speaker for the Soroptimist Club of Nevada City during their dinner meeting last Thursday night are: Pauline Bergemann, President, on her right, and Vivian Berggren, program chairman, on her left. ae Geir Sat Tie ies Sey aS Rs re ES Sa i Ba at wR i a oe ee a a ‘Superior of Mt, Woman’s Day Lura Arnold 265-2471 The Nugget... ‘April 26, 1967 5 Sister Teresa Golden Jubilee In 1914, Sister Mary Teresa entered the Mercy Order and three years later took her final vows in this same convent, Mt, St. Mary's of Grass Valley, Last Saturday, fifty years later,Sister Mary Teresa was the honored guest of festivities commemorating that important day in her life, Special thanksgiving mass was held in St, Patrick's Church, Grass Valley, at 11:00 a.m, with Monsignor Conley of Marysville acting in the absence of Bishop Bell of Sacramento, Father Daley of Nevada City; Father Gilligan of Grass Valley; and Father Boland of Elk Grove assisted, with Father John Dwyer of Gilroy, a former student of the sister, presenting the sermon and a resume of her influential life, A reception was held in the parlors of the convent between 200-4:00 p.m,, preceded by a 120 dinner prepared and served to 80 guests by the Catholic Ladies Relief Society, Over 300 friends and guests met and congratulated Sister Mary Teresa in rooms beautifully decorated in pink, white and gold, Outstanding above the mountain of gifts, was a wall panel created by a visiting.nun, with the scripture verse, “In thee, O Lord, have I hoped,—Let me never be confounded,” Refreshments were served by the Parent’s Club—many of them her former students, During the festivities arranged by Sister Mary Paulette, St. Mary's, Sister Mary Teresa remarked that many of her guests were former students, and now grandparents, but she felt no older, Many relatives attended the celebration—a niece who is a Holy Family nun; her 80 year old sister from San Francisco, and others from Long Beach and Los Angeles, Mother Mary Charles of Omaha, Nebraska, Provincial of the Order, now head of the entire order, was also present, Sister Mary Teresa still teaches in Mt, St, Mary's, and is looking forward to her diamond jubilee, When asked her thoughts over this memorable event in her life, she replied, “I°ll never get over this, I was so excited going into church this morning, and I've been walking on a cloud all day, A bit tired, perhaps, —but aren't these people wonderful?"
