$ __..The Nugget,:. April 26, 1967 : Hore and There by Kimary IDID ITALL BY DEADLINE UNLESS THE P.O. . DOUBLECROSSED ME by cancelling the mail ten seconds too soon, thereby leaving my letter of leftovers for’a later delinquent, and disastrous, postmark. IN LEANER YEARS I'VE TEASED THE IRS with barely discernable tidbits of penny-ante early in Jan., but this year's toil produced a riper harvest, so as Donation Day drew near I drew a deep breath and did nothing but HOARD until I heard thetolling of the tax-time count down. MY HEART SIMPLY WASN'T IN IT BECAUSE MY INCOME WAS! In recent times: I've developed a permanent laryngitis from bidding my greenbacks goodbye; not to speak of consistently chapped lips from kissing my coinage adieu; and a chronic nasal drip from the tears that flow with each departure. I have an insdtiable desire to become better acquainted with my currency. AND MY NERVOUS SYSTEM IS SHOT, TOO! The shock of feeding the Federal was flattening, but re-adding all those tax payments I had protestingly tossed to other avid agencies for the past annum, PLUS one year's outgoing interest untidily shoveled into one huge _ sub-total, incapacitated my mental reflexes for over a month. AND BELIEVE ME, BENTLEY, when you are dirtying those aseptic white spaces ona tax blank, you'd better be in full command of all YOUR mental faculties, plus extra intellectual exercises solicited from a tax acclimated accountant. Accountant fees are DEDUCTIBLE, you know, and don't forget that word "deductible" has become the most seductive sound in the unabridged edition. IF YOU ARE UNABAS HEDLY BROKE or decidedly dented, you may still recruit outside aidby pilfering pointers from some unsuspecting CPA at a cocktail party. (SOME OTHER HOUSE, STUPID! YOU CAN'T AFFORD IT!) Begin the campaign by casually discussing today's tax problems and allowable deductions. Progress to possible passables in exemptions and carry on through positive penalties, and the gross inadequacies/unusual alertness of the Internal Revenue. Be sure the purpose of this inquisition is cleverly concealed or you may receive a "Tax Consultation" statement too late for deduction and too early for your financial compliance. : IF CORRECTLY CONDUCTED, THIS "IMPROMPTU" QUESTION AND.ANSWER SYSTEM WILLGIVE YOU GOBS OF FREE INFORMATION, since all accountants are figure conscious (8452 TYPE OF FIGURE) twenty-four hours a day .It's a disease of the industry, and almost irreversible once they set their sights on accounting as a career, so IT IS UP TO YOU TO EXPLOIT THIS WEAKNESS TO YOUR OWN ADVANTAGE AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY! AND WHEN IT COMES TO TAXES, TEDDY, you'd better take advantage of every mildewed mite of opportunity you can eke out of a form 1040. You'll need it! POSIES PROFFERED: To JEANNE WORTH, a cheerful asset to Nevada City; and the cleverest, cutest Inn Keeper in our County. NEWSING AROUND; . ATTENTION EVERYONE: My eraser is getting worn! Here for the FINAL decision is the date of the next GOLDEN GALA BENEFIT BALL, It will be October 28th, and in case you wonder if the committee has been sampling the champagne~NOT SO! It just happens that various dates were difficult i fips together, but all is now nicely cohered into one lovely ackage, THE EDITOR. Some time ago the Nevada County Supervisors gave the O.K. to hire women dispatchers for the Sheriff's Department, sO more deputies could be released for field work and investigations. All of this is welland good "except for one small detail," It would seem to the layman that ‘there are plenty of deputies to goaround at least in the day time, but at night “well, that is the problem." j 4 Western Nevada County has only two deputies and one prowl car to cover the area from Interstate 80 on the east to Englebright dam on the west, and from North San Juan onthe north to Bear River on the south. In addition to all of this, the Nevada City Police Department has only one patrolman on duty at night, and if an emergency ‘should arise the night deputies must assist him, In years past, police protection was, not needed as much in rural areas as it is in these days of automation. But now the question is, what would be done if a hold-up occurred in North San Juan, a burglary at Bear River, a shooting at Englebright, and the Nevada City officer was trying toapprehend bank robbers, all in the same night? Improbable, but not entirely
impossible! Should the people in difficulty ask the criminals to wait until the deputies who are patrolling in some other part of the County can be summoned to their aid? Not hardly, when the whole solution to the problem is really quite simple! Take two deputies from the day shift, who were replaced by women anyway, and put them on the night shift in The Rough and Ready Fire Dept. Our hosts were Mr, and Mrs, Erol Richards of Banner Grange, , They showed beautiful slides of Mexico from Nogales through Guaymas and Mazatlan to Guadalajara, Their experiences were most interesting, They met many travelors and even winter residents from Nevada County. The fishing was splendid, They made the ferry crossing from the mainland to LaPaz in Baja Calif, They enjoyed the boat trip on the tropical river at San Blas, The farming is extremely limited due to lack of water but the pictures they showed proved how good it could be.
