May Day used to mean May Baskets filled with flowers for
your very favorite people, Mine as I recall were mostly made
with paste, paper, and crayon and took a great deal of time and ~
work on my part. They went always to my mother, whenever
possible to my grandmother and a favorite aunt or cousin (we
lived away out in the country), and even occasionally to a special friend. Usually there was a party with a Maypole dance, I.
remember with great glee trying to get the in and under bit
just right as we ski around the pole to weave the ribbons
down, Each turn brought you a little closer to the center
and more skill was required. I don't remember any ever being
just right but the fun was there. What a lot of things our kids
today miss with their sophisticated entertainment. Chases
Calendar of Annual Events lists 31 special celebrations for
the first day of May but nary a May Basket or Maypole, Some
of the 31 look pretty exciting tho’. One of them extended right .
on through September 30, It was purely commercial but had
a fun kind of name "Yams for Summertime Easy Livin'".
Another cutie was "Give Your Girl a Pearl Day". Some of the
more appropriate ones were Lei Day which is a major celebration in Hawaii, Another was the Annual Feast Day and Corn
Dance at the San Felipe Pueblo in New Mexico. In Istanbul,
Turkey they celebrate their Spring Feast and Tulip Festival
on May 1, In Florida they have an All Florida Folk Festival.
I didn't think "Its Mattress Size-up Time" or "International
Play Your Own Harpsicord Month" added much to the date.
And to me Labor celebrations belong in September. Chases isn't
the only place. there is a busy month of May. May in Western
Nevada county and Rough and Ready in particular seems to
explode with activity.
Sunday, May 2 the Pioneer Art Club will honor Rough and
Ready with a Paint-In. Please come. The old Blacksmith Shop
needs you. The art club has promised half of its proceeds to
the restoration of the shop. An auction is scheduled for 4 p.m,* *
Monday, May 3 at 7:30 p.m. the planning commission meets
in the supervisors' chambers and will include the naming of
Rough and Ready roads in its agenda, Again it's important to
be there, All our service agencies, fire, ambulancé, etc. need
street identification. :

Wednesday, May 5 at 2:30 p.m. the Bookmobile makes its
bi-monthly stop here by the cafe porch, ;
My young friend Miss Loris Best found April busy and enjoyable. She attended the Science Fair at Cal Expo with her
biology club on Monday, April 17. It was a-wonderful honor for
Ron Small of our Rough and Ready 4-H Club to come home with.
special honors. “Ron's true love is photography. I don't know
which interest came first science or photography, or if they
work together. Whichever, Ron does beautiful things with his
photography. .Loris and her mother Mrs, Alice Best both work
with the 4-H club and have a deep interest in it. Mrs, Best is
a clothing project leader, On Friday of that same Science Fair
week, the Sophomore class of NUHS sponsored a Sadie Hawkins
dance and contrary to the reverse dating report the boys did
seem to like the girls to ask them to the dance. Part of the
Sadie Hawkins image I guess, though the only thing I found out
about Sadie Hawkins was that her big day is November 14, The
kids had a local group, the Trilliums, play for the dance. My
reports indicate it was a ball. Mike Jonte also attended, The
biology club has a trip to the Oakland Museum planned for this
week, They are particularly interested in the floor of natural
sciences, I understand its grand. I'm looking forward to seeing
the floor of history. The Rough and Ready kitchen is there.
I suspect they call it the Pioneer Kitchen but look carefully,
most of it came from Rough and Ready, the old Frank Fippin
house, and our own Rough and Ready promoter Helene Hurlbut
of Helen's Antiques. ;

On Earth Day, Thursday, a group of Rough and Ready
youngsters walked to NUHS, They found it most enjoyable but
a little long to do every day. :

Some things apparently have slowed down, There is a
story around that in the 1860s news of the death of Lincoln
was passed from miner to miner and reached Rough and Ready
from Marysville in 30 minutes, The countryside was solid miner
tc miner shouting distance. Nowadays you're lucky if you can
get a free telephone line in 30 minutes and it takes an hour to
drive the distance even with the gas buggy.
The ates Ronee and Ready who sing with the Newcomers Lyric Ensemble participated in the dedication program
at the Veterans Hall last Sunday, Fourteen plaques were dedicated and will be installed on the freeway overpasses, One at
each ramp in the area, They are for our men who gave their
lives overseas and are being remembered by the veterans
organizations of the communities in this way. There were two

Orchids to Ensign Thomas K, Rackerby, son of Col, (ret.)
and Mrs, Archie B, Rackerby, of Bitney Springs Road, Young
Tom graduated from UC Davis in '69, enlisted in'69, has
completed his training, and is now stationed on the destroyer .
USS Hepburn off the coast of South Vietnam,
Orchids too to the Cookie Pack crew, Their next pack will
be Tuesday, May 11. Mrs, Faye Vonde Veld tells me they are
still packing but for lots fewer boys, They are sincerely hoping
' the number will-continue to dwindle right down to nothing, We
would really be smart wouldn't we if we could learn to settle —
differences around the conference table before we wipe ourselves
from the face of the earth with modern super WeagKns.

The Parry Ranch has a new baby. Philip and Mary Parry
of Rough and Ready Road raise a few horses just for the love
of horses, The new baby arrived on Penn Valley Rodeo Day.
Like all little colts she seems to be all legs and she sure knows
how to use them, After each little helping of warm milk she
takes a few turns over the hill and round and round-mother.
Mother is a dark bay. I don't know father, Baby looks like she
might be going to be a light bay. Her mane and tail will be
bay points but those little flying feet look quite light to even
turn black, She has a beautiful white heart (maybe horsemen
call it a blaze) on her face. One of my real summer thrills
will be watching her grow. The horse is surely one of nature's
most interesting miracles,

Mr, and Mrs, August Miller of Santa Ana and their two
children visited Rough and Ready last week. Mrs, Miller is
a sister of Mrs. Constance Baer and they came by for a quickie
weekend visit with her.

Mr, Carroll Justice has started a new career. Mr. Justice
was our NID field man when we came here 15 years ago. Most
of the years since thenhe has worked as a movie projectionist.
Now he is going to fly. He plans on soloing soon, at least before
his 75th birthday which is any day now. His oldest son Lannie
is training with him at the new training field near Placerville,
Mr. Justice assured us that it was him that interested his son
in flying not the other way around as you would expect, Lannie
was just a kid when we were new here, Used to give me a hand
with my chores, He is married now and lives in Sacramento.
The Justices’ other son also lives and works in the valley,
Mrs, Leslie Justice also has a hobby, She plays the piano beautifully as many of you who attend the Christian Women's luncheons can attest.
