WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29, 1970 As usual the stands, as shown here, were crowded. Sale of beer and soda pop was undoubtedly down due to the cold. The bar-b-que didn't suffer. It served many a hot, tasty meal, By DICK FALCONER Rodeo Day dawned at the Penn Valley Rodeo Grounds Sunday dark and threatening, with gray skies and a biting, blustery wind. But the crowd was there, Dick Hemsted and his feisty stock were there, and the handsome model of the Bridgeport bridge was there, For the 14th consecutive year, the Penn Valley Fire Department got lucky again. The crowd stuck, despite the bitter weather. When you are willing to face such a wind as coursed through Penn Valley on Sunday, wrap up as best you can with whatever you have available to keep you warmwhich in many cases is not enough you lose your amateur standing and become atrue aficionado, and glory to your name. A sudden fall of rain mixed with soft hail at about. four o'clock broke up the show for all but a few of thie most devoted rodeo watchers, But by then the show was pretty well run through, and people streamed out of the grounds feeling good the whole thing. : _So. early in-the rodeo .season as this event occurs, the stock is fresh, fast and rough, and land many good cowboys bit the dust. The delicious barbecue dinner enticed hundreds, as usual. Prepared under the eagle eye of Carl Feisel and served by the ladies of, the Fire Departments’ Women's Auxiliary, the food was pronounced to be as good this year as ever, and many were heard to state that it was better than ever. Many interested ~ people watched as Assemblyman Gene Chappie presided at the unveiling of the model of the old Bridgeport bridge. Later, Chappie rode in the grand entry parade, aboard Harold Ennor's Apaloosa, "Hoot". The freezing rain late in the afternoon prevented many from stopping to inspect the model after the show, but. it will be shown ‘in several locations Luis during the coming months, as ~ will be announced by the bridge committee -at an early date. = ph
