COLD AND wet weather didn't hamper the crowd at the annual Penn Valley Rodeo Sunday.
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29, 1970
As usual the stands, as shown here, were crowded. Sale of beer and soda pop was undoubtedly
down due to the cold. The bar-b-que didn't suffer. It served many a hot, tasty meal,
By DICK FALCONER
Rodeo Day dawned at the Penn
Valley Rodeo Grounds Sunday
dark and threatening, with gray
skies and a biting, blustery wind.
But the crowd was there, Dick
Hemsted and his feisty stock
were there, and the handsome
model of the Bridgeport bridge
was there,
For the 14th consecutive year,
the Penn Valley Fire Department
got lucky again. The crowd stuck,
despite the bitter weather. When
you are willing to face such a
wind as coursed through Penn
Valley on Sunday, wrap up as
best you can with whatever you
have available to keep you warmwhich in many cases is not
enough you lose your amateur
standing and become atrue aficionado, and glory to your name.
A sudden fall of rain mixed
with soft hail at about. four
o'clock broke up the show for
all but a few of thie most devoted
rodeo watchers, But by then the
show was pretty well run
through, and people streamed out
of the grounds feeling good
the whole thing. :
_So. early in-the rodeo .season
as this event occurs, the stock
is fresh, fast and rough, and land
many good cowboys bit the dust.

it.
The delicious barbecue dinner enticed hundreds, as usual.
Prepared under the eagle eye of
Carl Feisel and served by the
ladies of, the Fire Departments’
Women's Auxiliary, the food was
pronounced to be as good this
year as ever, and many were
heard to state that it was better
than ever.
Many interested ~ people
watched as Assemblyman Gene
Chappie presided at the unveiling
of the model of the old Bridgeport bridge. Later, Chappie rode
in the grand entry parade, aboard
Harold Ennor's Apaloosa,
"Hoot". The freezing rain late
in the afternoon prevented many
from stopping to inspect the
model after the show, but. it will
be shown ‘in several locations
Luis during the coming months, as ~
will be announced by the bridge
committee -at an early date.
