Since it blossoms before the large leaves appear on the woody, twining vines and thecolors are drab, one can easily pass by on the trail without noticing it. The calyx-tube is greenish, the over-all size of the bloom being about 2.1/2 inches at the most, It climbs 5 to 12 feet high, intertwining amongst other shrubs, sometimes so thick as to form huge masses of flowers. The heart-shaped leaves are from 2 to 6 inches long: and covered with fine hairs on both surfaces, A very colorful orange and black caterpillar depends on these leaves for its food so it is not uncommon to find the vine completely denuded of all foliage. Quite a common plant, it may be found along ditches and trails; locally I found it along the Excetsior ditch and near Folsom Lake. Blooming period is March through April.
