. Sccoans Letters
: TO CORINTHIA.
Dear Corinthia:
I just had to write and tell you that my brother is
learning tobe a Boy Scout. Last month he joined the Bat
Patrol and mother bought him a new green uniform and
sneakers and a handbook that tells all about how to be a
Boy Scout. I read part of the book and it tells that when
you are a scout the forests and fields, rivers and lakes are
your playground. The book also shows how to tie knots,
build fires without matches and how to win lots of merit
badges.
My brother hasn't won any merit badges yet but he did
cut his finger opening a can of dog food with his new
scout knife. Daddy looked at the cut and said it wasn't
very deep at all but this was probably because my brother
was still only a Tenderfoot.
The patrol meetings are every Tuesday night and usually the meetings are at Looey's place. My brother says
he likes it when they meet at Looey's place because
Looey's mother serves cookies and punch while they play
pool on Looey's pooltable. My brother's pal Randy is the
best pool shooter and I guess that is why he is the patrol
leader.
My father says that he thought that scouts were supposed to go on hikes and tie knots and get bitten by
snakes and contract bad cases of poison ivy and things
like that, My brother says that what daddy was thinking
about was Scout-Craft but that they had all decided to
wait until summer for that. Until then they are learning
how to report fires on the telephone and to tie bowlines
and square-knots, My brother says that they are also doing a lot of thinking about doing some good turns. He
showed daddy where his scout book says that an honestto-goodness live-wire patrol does plenty of things on its
own. Their very first project is to save up enough money
to buy three more cues for Looey's pool table.
Atthe last meeting my brother learned the patrol call
which is the cry of the patrol animal. Hecan now make
sounds like a bat, which I can tell you, Corinthia, is
pretty awful. Daddy says he figures from what he can
learn of the patrol's activities, their patrol call should
bethesound of a cue-ball dropping into a corner pocket
and he has given my brother credit for seven good turns
just for not practicing his bat calls around the house,
Next Saturday night theBat Patrolis having a special
“cook-out” at our place. They are going to build a fire
in our fireplace and roast weinies and marshmallows and
watch Bonanza on T.V.
My father said he could see the wisdom of the patrol
deciding to watch Bonanza becauseBonanza was all about
forests and fields and outdoor life and the patrol could
learn a lot from programs like that.
I don't think mother is too enthusiastic about this
“cook-out”
weinies and marshmallows getting on the carpet, but do
you know something, Corinthia? Daddy is real enthusiastic. He told my brother he thought that there was nothing
finer than for a group of fellows to sit around their own
campfire and cook their own food and sing and laugh together in real comradeship. Daddy said he was really
glad to see my brother developing into a real outdoor
type he-man.
Mother's only answer to all this was that she was sure
‘that there was more than one bat around our place and
that they could both do her a good turn by going down
town-and practice helping little old ladies across the
street or something.
I think I know what she was driving at,
Corinthia.
don't you,
_As always,
hasan
