Coaches
Contracts
Held Up
Alumni pressures made
themselves felt Monday night
at a meeting of the Nevada
Union High School District
board.
Allteachers, except three
who had resigned, were offered new contracts for the
1961-62 school year with two
notable exceptions: Ursal
Sanpp andJames Guinn, football coaches.
Granting of tenure and
authorizing the:contracts was
held up until the end of the
board: meeting in order to
allow board members to have
a personnel meeting, at the
request of member Jack
Brickell,
Tenure was then granted
all who qualified, and all
but the two contracts were
authorized. — .
The board is understood to
have desired to have a further
discussion on the two noted
contracts.
Since both aretenure
teachers, it is assured that the
subject of idscussion is the
sports program at the high
school-probable football.
_ And witha poor record last
year, the high school coaches
presumable are "on the pan"
for their team record.
Coaching assignments are
a part of teaching contracts
and carry. additional pay for
work done. The board apparently is_ considering
whether to withhold coaching assignment from one or
both of the teachers, ~

WITHIN A GNATS EYELASH.Or should we more correctly say,
“within a beavers eyelash" of falling. This 8" tree cut by
beaver tooth powered saws is almostready to topple. The logs

‘As Busy As Beavers’
Thedictionary tells us
that, “an amphibious rodent
of the genus Castor, valued
for its fur and---noted for its
ingenuity indamming
streams with trees, branches,
stones, mud, etc. ---" is
called a beaver. :
Our children can tell us
that they have been "as busy
as beavers" all afternoon and
that's why they didn't do
their homework!
If we remember our history, the beaver hat was
quite the fashion a hundred »
years ago.

beaver tribe is well prepared
for the coming spring run-off.
Their dams are in excellent
repair and their spillways
clear of debris.
Beavers usually build their
log and mud houses in the
lakes which form behind the
dams Our Deer Creek friends
seem to prefer burrowing in
the lake bank where they dig
long tunnels which serve as
living quarters and also as
store houses for food.
FORESTRY DIVISION PLANS —
BANNER MT. EXPANSION
Ex pansion plans for the
California Division of
Forestry facilities atop Banner Mountain were revealed
this week by State Forester
Robert Burns, head of the-Nevada-Yuba forestry facilities.
The F orestry Division is
negotiating with the NID,
Herb Nile, and the Keystone
Copper Corporation which
Owns the former Lava Cap
mine property in order to increase the size of forestry
holdings on the mountain top
from one acre to eight.
Upon completion of the
immediate expansion, Burns
saidthe mountain top would
then be enhanced to provide
expanded and improved
picnic facilities.
Burns said the Division of
Highways has budgeted for
the paving of the road leading up the Banner Mountain
crest from the You. Bet road
junction, and that the paving
will likely be completed by

This wasrevealed Monday
at a meeting of the Nevada
City Chamber of Commerce
by a representative of acommittee acting for the City of
Nevada .
Herbert Nile said he, M.

of value was to guide the
council in arriving at a fair
price in dealing with a representative of The Auburn

The principal beaver food
is bark and leaves from the
trees they have felled. Not
much is wasted, The logs are
used for dams and houses and
the bark and leaves for food.
Saturday members of the
Stockton Corral of Westemers, a historical group,
will tour the Nevada City
area. One of the places they
will visitis Beaver Creek--oops, I mean Deer Creek..
June.
Burns said there is $17, 000
budgeted for construction of
a communications building ,
residence, and property acquisition.
The Division of Forestry is
in the process of erecting a

center which will place under one roof all existing
facilities there now. In addition it will expand radio
relay facilities for the
Forestry Division, the Division of Highways, the Fish
and Game Division, the
Water Resources Board, and
the California Highway
Patrol.
Other governmental
agencies are expected to join
in the use of the relay
Station, Burns Said.
A 12KV standby generator
will be installed at the
facility in order to assure
continous operation in the
event of a power failure.
About. half of the budget
is for the construction of a
residence for the use of the
person assigned to maintain
the facility.
The county has recently
laid fresh gravel on the You
Betroad extension of Banner
Mountain Road beyond the
Lava Cap intersection, and
Burns said when funds are
available the county plans to
extend the pavement to join
withthe proposed state paving job.
THE GRAND CANAL OF DEER CREEK. .Well,
not quite. In the left center is one of the
main intake canals tothe beaver built lake.
The canal drains surrounding land and also
serves as a waterway to transport logs (cut
to short lengths) to the dam site.
LAKE, DAM, SPILLWAYS AND CREEK..In the right foreground is one of the bypass
spillways built by beavers to allow water to re-enter the creek below-the dam. These
spillways as well as the canals are built to.help maintain the level of the lake which
