But ot much showed up in print about the winter storms and travelers battles with summit blizzards. The stage driver on one summit crossing was 17-year-old Johnny Mac, a veteran on the run from Nevada City to Carson Valley. Johnny had a tendency to break records on crossing time, He was always in a hurry the other travelers said, Somehow the wind was always at Johnny's back and the harder it blew the sharper was thegleaminhiseye. Johnny said his job was staying ahead of that wind, But the wild, high howler caught up with him one spring night and the two raced over the ridges and through the canyons with Johnny's life as prize. John left Jack's Ranch carrying only freight at dusk in a heavy fall of snow. He felt the wind pick up as his horses gained speed, It was a teasing wind, flirting with sub-freezing gusts that twisted in mid-flight and threw the snow intohis horses eyes. He could see nothing but flying ghosts of white so he let the horses pick their own way. He felt uneasy, --as though he were in the center of a circling fury instead of riding the free flowing head. Johnny shouted to the wind and he shouted to his horses and he felt the challenge, But the challenge hadn't yet been given. He was chest deep in a flooded stream before he knew what game that wind wanted to play. Theteam strayed from the road in a flooded valley and blindly stopped in the freezing water. John climbed over the horses heads and dropped into the water in front of the lead animals, By shouting and pulling he led-them out and onto a road he could find only by feel, : Johnny didn't climb back onto his seat, Hefeltthe ice begin to form on the waterin his boots and in his mind he imagined the ice creeping up and through his body, The 17-year-old couldn 't suppress a grin, Neither he nor that wind knew anything of death and it was laughter they hurled at each other, Johnny took his reins, positioned himself on the ground at about the center of his coach, and drove his horses at a speed that stretched his muscles and warmed the blood in his ice caked boots, John crossed the mountains and ran down the eastern slope. When he stopped at a miners camp it was for dry clothes, Johnny Mac climbed back onto his seat, let out his horses on the straight desert road and rode that wind to his scheduled stop in the Carson Valley, S961 ‘8 Tdy***1988nN Aiun0> epeaon’** pf
