THE. COVERED BRIDGE at Bridgeport is one of the scenic views a trip through French Corral
will reveal. The bridge is reported to be the longest covered bridge in this country. Hopes
are high that in the near future it will be restored.
Nevada County clerk has had 3.
major jobs in past 100 years
The Nugget is continuing a
series of stories dealing with
the history of elective county
offices and names of Nevada
Countyans who have held them.
"100 Years of Nevada County"
published by The Nugget in 1951
is the source material. Duties
of the offices and the roster of
names associated with them have
changed since the publication
date.
._ County Clerk and Auditor
Ralph E, Deeble has three big
jobs to do in his public office.
As auditor he is bookkeeper for
the .county; as clerk he takes
; care of clerical work for the
s superior court, and administers
elections and registration of voters. ; ;
His bookkeeping duties include
the auditing of tax bills and warrants, computing the tax roll,
and preparing the annual budhe and his staff file all records,
issue all court writs, summonses, abstracts, keep minutes
and collect fees.
Election work in addition to
registration includes location of
polling places, selection of personnel to operate the polls, and
receipt and tabulation of votes.
But there are many other
things his office does. It's the
place where marriage licenses
are sold, where notary publics
are certified, where articles
of incorporation are filed and
where medical certificates and
naturalization papers are kept.
This office, which listed
11,153 registered voters for the
November, 1950 election, and
took in $5,485.47 in fees last
year is staffed by four deputies. They are Mrs, Jean Rowe
Keeny, Miss Rita E, Hutchison,
Mrs. Vera Steger and Erik Andersen.
Fees last .year include $482
by the county; $1,284.22 posted
by candidates for offices, and
$3,719.25 miscellaneous. ‘
Nevada is one of the few counties in the state in which the
auditor and county clerk duties
are combined into. one office, a
combination that has. existed
since the formation of the county
a hundred years ago today.
