its ‘author, Senator Stephen P. Teale (D-West Point). “IT introduced this measure at the request of the Placer County Board of Supervisors," Teale said, “in an effort to find a@ means to fund the continually mounting costs of snow removal in and around recreation areas in that county and other throughout the Third Senatorial District. "But, after further investigation and consideration of the impact the measure might have on the skiing industry in an area which includes some of the major ski resorts of the state, the board decided not to press for passage of the bill at this time and I have, therefore, withdrawn it from the hearing calendar." Senate Bill 271 would have allowed counties to levy a tax onthe use of ski lifts in areas where tourist. use increases snow removal and road maintenance costs and specifies that the proceeds be used for road maintenance and snow removal. “T want to stress," Teale said, “that while this approach does not seem to be the solution, the problem of rising county costs. for snow removal and road maintenance in winter recreation areas remains. As the number of subdivisions, roads and winter sports areas continue to grow, so_will the costs to local government for maintaining these roads, and Ready and Mrs. Albertina Penrose Larsen of North Bloomfield were guests of Mrs. Fay Dunbar at the Newcomers March luncheon, Mrs, Paull and Mrs. Larsen are not newcomers, They remember the old days, first hand, and attended especially to hear Robert Paine talk about the old Narrow Gauge Railroad and the old fun resort at Lake Olympia. These lucky ladies were born in Nevada county and their experiences go back even a few years further than those of Paine. He knew them both from the old days, His lecture included many nostalgic memories of olden times in Nevada county for them, : R&R The Rough and Ready Grange Easter Sunrise Service and Breakfast brought together over 100 old friends and neighbors. Rev. Wagner, who conducted the services, reminded the group that he conducted the first community sunrise service at the Little Wedding Chapel in 1959, Hot coffee and homemade coffee cake were served to the guests by the ladies of the _ grange before the custom of serving breakfast was begun. I can remember some beautiful Easter mornings and some very wet and cold ones. Sunday was certainly one of the most beautiful ones. R&R The grange will serve a Swiss steak dinner on Saturday, April 11 from 5:30 until 8:00 p.m. The menu includes beet salad and homemade peach cobbler. The afternoon public party will be Sunday April 12 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. ? R&R a The Harwood brothers, Terry and Bruce, have both been having some exciting experiences. Sergeant Terence Harwood of the U. S. Air Force is presently stationed at Nellis Air Base. He was first assigned to special weapons school in Denver and later sent to Nellis where he has completed almost three years of service. He is home for a couple of weeks leave and is planning only rest and relaxation. GBruce Harwood, freshman at NUHS, competed with his team at the wrestling meet in San Bruno last weekend, He took 4th place, Martin Vogt is his coach, Mrs. Martina Morrison Paull of Rough R&R Some of the shops in Rough and Ready are undergoing a face lifting. First it was the Toll House Antiques with a beautiful new antique red paint job, Now Ye Olde Shop is to be reopened into the restaurant. Mrs, John (lola) Reininger plans to continue with the original owners combination of antiques and gifts but will add some interesting touches of her own. Originally there was a weaving shop run by Mama (Mrs, Alex) Gravender, in this portion of the building, and the restaurant and weaving shop were connected, Mrs, Gravender wore a Swedish costume at her work and it was a very attractive and interesting shop. Later when the shop became the House of Lisa, run by Mrs, Lisetta Scheave, it was an antique shop. The Ray Olivers took over the shop when Mrs, Scheave decided to build her little wedding chapel. The latest change at the Wedding Chapel is a Bridal Gown Boutique. It was recently added by Mrs. Scheave with the help of her daughter, Mrs. J. P. Kelly, of Sacramento. R&R _ J. P. Kelly of Sacramento was one of the workmen at the old blacksmith shop over the weekend. The crew who worked this weekend removed most of the loose pieces of old roofing, shored up the sagging west side and put new siding on about half of the east side of the shop. Except for the remodeling being done by Mr. Yost on the old Sid Fippin home this is the biggest improvement in town and the best of it is yet to come. Allan McCrea, chairman of the restoration committee plans to have a completely restored blacksmith shop in time for the Secession Day Celebration on Sunday, June 28, Mr. Allan Brown and Mr, Don Long, who also worked with the Sunday crew believe that this is entirely possible. Mmes. Baer, Brown, Dunbar, Kelly, Long, McCrea, and Scheave provided a hamburger feast for the cres, R&R ‘ One activity given the nod by the Secession Day committee for this year, is a repeat of the Gold. Poke drawing, The drawing provided funds for the blacksmith shop restoration and proved to be a very interesting and popular activity. The Allan McCreas of Rough and Ready sponsored the first~one which was held in 1968, This one will be sponsored by the restoration committee itself and has been given the go ahead by the chamber board of directors. Thomas, chairman of the Secession Day committee, had suggested Secession Day was a good time to hold the drawing. At their last meeting the board of directors of the chamber heartily endorsed the plans! for this years celebration. Their plans include lots of music and a new play as_well as a repeat of the reenactment of the secession and the parade of pioneer personalities. Next chamber board meeting will be April 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the real estate office. A postlude to Secession Days will be the musical play "Rough and Ready" to be presented at the old Nevada Theater on July 4th if the Liberal Arts present plans are materialized, ‘ R&R Mr. and Mrs, Ernest Frazer have been enticed further away from Rough and Ready and Mrs. Frazer's parents, the Van Johnsons, by a really good business opportunity in Southern California, The young couple are now ae aaa: home in Victorville, California. ‘ Mrs. Clara Bursill is getting about quite well in her new cast. She fell and broke two bones in her foot a couple of weeks ago and had to have it immobilized. Recovery has been very slow and painful but the worst seems to ke now. -R-& R : Last Sunday evening, just about the time that I was finishing my seek's news, there was a fire at the Truebloods. Both fire trucks and a full crew of 16 men turned out to fight the fire which, fortunately, was easily controlled. For atime it had been quite frightening and Trueblood was afraid it might get away from him, He had thought that his fire from the day before was completely out, but the wind fanned it back to life. It got into a pile of old dry wood. piled close by and really took off, Two things we can learn from this fire are: don't burn when the wind is blowing and never trust that a fire is out — be sure! ; : R&R Mrs, Terry (Joann) Stevens is at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital where she is recuperating from recent surgery. ~ aps 2s : ¢ r \ Van Jotmson is at-Rideout Hospital in Marysville, He is recuperating from recent surgery and could probably. use cheering up. = ss David Siegfried left last Tuesday for service in Vietnam..David-is an electronics specialist with the U.
