into law an increase in GI edu. cational benefits which will be
retroactive to Feb. 1, 1970.
This increase will be reflect,ed automatically in the educa/ tion checks at some future date
and will help many returning
Vietnam veterans to apply for

civilian life.

Veteran: Many questions have

an ex-serviceman receives for

Social Security for the timehe serves in one of the components of the Armed Forces
of the United States, The following may help to clear some
questions;
If you were in the Armed
Forces during World War
and: Post World War ‘II periods
(September 16, 1940 December 31, 1956) you may receive
ity earnings credits
of-$160 for éach month or part
of a month of active duty.
Starting in 1957, active military service (and active duty
of reservists for training purposes) was covered by social
security. A serviceman pays
social security contributions on
his basic pay at the same rate
that a civilian employee does.
Starting in 1968, additional
wage credits for military service, generally $100 per month
— were provided to servicependent — *present law $155, men. The serviceman pays no
new law $205, Veterans with: contributions, and these were
two dependents = present law provided to take in account of
$175, new law $230; and for the fact that servicemen receive
each additional child under the wages in kind such as room
old law $10 and under the new
law $18. Different rates are in
effect for three-quarter time;
half time and cooperative

wives who are eligible under
this. new law, educational benefits will be increased from the
present $130 to $175 under the
new law. Different scales for
those only taking three-quarters, half-time and institutionalbusiness courses.
