Forest Service Experiments With Avalanches
NEVADA CITY----A report
on experimental avalanche
control was released by the
T ahoe National Forest this
week. The work was carried
out under the direction of the
Forest Service's expert on
avalanches, Montogomery
“Monty” Atwater, at Squaw
Valley during the late winter
of ‘61 and early spring of ‘62.
A device was needed to
plant, or place, explosive
charges in potentially dangerous snow slide country to
protect the skiers and homes

Up to the time of this report there were only two ways
to dislodge the overhanging
snow, one was by using artillery and the other by hand
‘placing the charges. The
method of using artillery is
«eee eit can be mobile,
unsuitable in some cases because Of the transportation
problem and also because of
the hazard to personnel in
firing at targets of under 400

Commissioner of Education
has notified Congressman
Harold T . (Bizz) Johnson representing Nevada County,
that the Nevada Union High
School District has qualified
for a $16,424 grant,
The grant is under the provisions of Public Law 874
which provides financial assistance to schools in areas affected by federal installations.
have toski along the face of
the slope and who get below
the crumbling edge of the
overhang in order to achieve
the best results.
As a solution to these problems, Atwater and his associates looked for a device
that could throw a charge to
a target at lessthan 400 yds. ,
yet did not cost much to fire,
posed no problem of fragmentation to the men firing
it, was relatively inexpensive and would be readily
available tothe government,
the rail roads and resort owners so that they could halt
potential avalanches,
After the testing last
spring, Atwater reported that
the easiest, cheapest, and
best operating device that he
and his colleagues had been
experimenting with was an
adaptation of the CO2 fired
gun that trains big-league
baseball teams in the art of
hitting. The deviceis called
the “Avalauncher" and will
send atwo pound package of
explosives more than 400 yds,
and is accuarate, he reports.
Atwater said in the report
