Recreation Is
A Project Bonus
Last week we urged voters in the Nevada .
Irrigation District toapprove the refunding
of old bonds and the issuance of $65 million in revenue bonds to allow the construction of the district's Yuba-Bear waterpower project.
The election will be held Tuesday, and
we again remind area voters of the impor.
tance of the project.
The project will increase water storage
at high elevation by construction of reservoirs at Jackson Meadow and Faucherie
sites. It will improve the district's water
distribution system. It will increase water
storage at lower elevations by construction
of Rollins Damon the Bear River and by
raising the level of the Scott's Flat Dam.
It will build two power plants on the Bear
River.
The entire project will be paid for from
power revenues already assured by a contract with Pacific Gas and Electric.
But the Nevada Irrigation District area
has a bonus benefit built into the YubaBear project.
The district has already submitted an
application tothe California Department of
Water Resources toestablish the project's
eligibility to apply for four grants of .
$300,000 each for the development of re.
creational usage at each of the project's
reservoirs---—Jackson Meadow, Faucherie,
Rollins and Scott's Flat.

HYDRAULICKING, .. Copies of Robert Wyckoff's "Hydraulicking" went on sale today..,With his usual flair
for promotion, Wyckoff has numbered and autographed
1000 of the 1250 first edition copies, so if you hurry
there'll be one waiting just for you...The book, although small, is a well organized gathering of. facts on
hydraulic mining in Nevada County, It is well written
tohold the reader's interest, and the language is not tech=
nical,..One ofthe pleasant surprises in the book is the
number and quality of reproductions, most of the m from
old photographs of hydraulic mining areas and operations,
A few.are Wyckoff photographs, including one of a currently/o perating hydraulic mine... R. Coke Wood,
California historian at the University of the Pacific, de‘scribes the book well: "... a publication that any collector of Californiana will desire. .." Osborn/Woods

deserve praise for their design and press work in’ making
this little book attractive as well as informative.

(which voids the card)... One of them (NC) has a $100

picked up another on the next shopping trip. The question: which to fill out? Chose one of''em, looked under

. story from Tracy where a similar card was used by grocers
. there: Partially filled, one card's seal was lifted by a

a recreational use plan for the Jackson

At Rollins and Scott's Flat, the district's
plans for recreational development have
not progressed as rapidly.
But without doubt Nevada County will
benefit from Rollins and Scott's Flat recreational use,
A recent study has shown that counties
with reservoir based recreational facilities
have experienced a per capita income increase of 57 per cent, and that tax collections in those counties have risen 64
per cent due to sales and property valuation
increases.

Letters To The Editor
Gentleman:
The Little Rock Junior
Chamber of Commerce will
host the 25th annual Ten Outstanding Young Men's Congress onJanuary 18-19, 1963,
This is the number one public
relations program of the
United States Jaycees andthe
purpose of this letter is to
solicit your support and encouragement for the Grass
Valley Jayceesto attend this
Congress,
The Little Rock Jaycees
had the pleasure of meeting
and visiting with the Grass
Valley Jaycees from Nevada
County at the TO YM Congressin Santa Monica, California. Their enthusiasm,
. black hats, Western hospitality, music, and covered
wagon added a very positive
mood to the Congress. We
also had the opportunity of
renewing our association
with the Grass Valley Jaycees
at the national Jaycee convention in Las Vegas this past
june. They doan outstanding
job in advertising the town
of Grass Valley and Nevada
County, particullarly when
we understand the limited
means by which they make
these trips and the personal
sacrifice of each representative,
The Little Rock and Arkansas Jaycees would like to
extend an invitation to the
Grass Valley Jaycees to attend the TOYM Congress in
Little Rock,, knowing that
they willcontribute substantially to the success of the
Congress. We understand that
Westerners prefer to sleep
outside, so we will provide
one of Arkansas’ choice camp
sites on the lawn of the Marion Hotel of Little Rock, Arkansas. We realize that, in
population, Grass Valley and
Nevada County represents a
rather small part of the state
of California, but the spirit
and enthusiasm of the Grass
Valley Jaycees brings credit
to your community and state.
This letter is written in an
effort to secure your support
and the support of the readers
of your publication to assist

from California communities

notice appeared in their local press.
However, we were able to
come to a definite understanding, and this was: to
notify each Bicycle Dealer in
various areas of the coming
annual event, andhave them
in accordance with your notification of this event, promote local interest at a local
level, which at present is
any way possible so that they
can attend the T en Outstanding Young Men's Congress in
Little Rock, Arkansas on January 18-19, 1963, It will be
our honor to have such an
outstanding group of your
men in attendence,
Sincerely,
V. Waner Marks,

capture the previous struggles our ancestors accepted
to better themselves, and
the entire Nation.

History of a Free People” our
great West was won by as
many Sun Bonnetts as Sombreros so our 49 historic past

all peoples that have read into the pages of our nation's
great accomplishments,
Ihave spoken to many educators about this, and to
them about a situation such as
freeways are deplorable, as
this is all that remains of our

buildings that all the hell is
being raised over in Sacramento and they were built
