The circuitous journey of an
1886 painting of Nevada City
has ended with return of the
painting here,
The ofl of the city, done by
W. J. Straight during the year
1886 as viewed from near the
Red Castle, is long and uncertain. However, it is known that
shortly after the painting was
created, it was relinquished to
anew owner who lived in Aue
burn in pay ment of a debt of
$150.
In time, the painting was given tothe Masonic Temple in
Auburn where it hung in partial
obscurity for inany years,Approximately twenty years
ago, a member of the Nevada
City Masonic lodge was visiting

and interest in seeing an early
day picture of Nevada City in
their hall, brought an offer for
him to bring the painting to his
home lodge, which he gladly
accepted,
During the centennial of the
Nevada City Chapter, Ray Polk
of Nevada City, started restoration so that the painting might
be hung inthe Temple for show.
Mrs, Elnor Lambert, 537 Coyote Street, Nevada City, has
offered to further restore the
painting by reuniting the paint
to the canvas where it ‘has
cracked and come loose, She
will also prevent further deterioration by oiling the entire

show a film. The film titled
“Selling One Guy Named Larry”
shows what the retarded can and
are doing across the country as
a result of sheltered workshop
training.

The official ground breaking
for the Truckee-Donner sewer
project was held last Saturday
at the construction site.
The event was attended by
many state and civic notables,
with State Senator Stephen
Teale of Calaveras County as
the main speaker. One of the
highlights of the proceedings
was the digging and installing
of two of the giant sections of
sewer line. The ceremony was
