NC dump
Rather than risk "an Indian i
uprising” the Nevada City Council tabled a request from Robert
Elliott to remove salvagable
items from the city dump.
Elliott and his Diversified
Company of Grass Valley requested permission to remove
items from the dump which may
be salvaged. He proposed paying
the city $1 per ton of material
which. is salvagable and stated
that. 300 tons, more or less,
could be taken from the dump,
"We have a problem with the
present residents" (of the dump)
City Manager Beryl Robinson
Jr. told the councilmen, He sug-.
gested the $1 a ton fee be paid to
the Kelly family, the present
residents of the dump.
"We have allowed our first
citizens of Nevada City to remain there (at the dump) for 40
years, They act as unofficial
caretakers, Legally the land is
not theirs but morally it is,”
Councilman Bob Paine said.
_City Attorney. William Wetherall said. the city could not
pay city funds to anyone "as a
gift."’ He suggested Elliott work
through the Kellys,
Robinson said that would. not
work, “the Kellys feel all salvagable material at the dump is

The matter was discussed for
nearly an hour. with the final

In other action Monday the
council passed an ordinance
amendment prohibiting dogs
from roaming the business district, Dogs must be under restraint of some kind within the
business district. The ordinance
will go into effect 30 days from
the date of passage.
The council failed to act on
Frank Amaral's request for an
advertising sign on a building to
be erected on the service station lot on Sacramento Street.
"This request does not follow
the ordinance," Mayor John Rankin. said, "as to how such a request must be made." The council agreed to return the request
and ask that it be submitted according to the ordinance,

The county planning commission has continued a study of a

The large pile broke into

of Forestry was called to assist

Larry Parsons, fire truck
driver, said the fire department
is taking action to alleviate the
fire hazard. On two occasions
Thursday the flames spread to
surrounding brush. Both times
the firemen, CDF and volunteers, were able to confine
the damage to small areas.
The sawdust pile is on property with three separate owners
and a fourth man has the rights
to sell the sawdust. Parsons said
the fire department officials are
contacting all four people involved.

small woodland fire on the Weston property on Anchor Lane at

of the fire was four small boys

It is interesting to note how many business trends there
are and how they affect a community.

of taxes and I thought that in this report I'd list the amount of
retail sales permits issued since the 1965-66 report, I want to
make some comparisons with counties that are about the size
of Nevada county.
‘See scale at bottom of column.
Although Nevada county had a sharp decrease in retail
sales permits between June '66 and July '67, it did recover and
level out from 1968 on, This is not necessarily indicative of
any particular trend in this county's economic trend, I does
however lead me to believe that these indicators do point to
a more stabilized economy.
“Ifyou will note the other mountain counties have had a
Steady decline in business license activity and in most of the
other it is a very minor upward trend. a
I did not compute the counties larger than ours because
generally most of the larger counties tend to have the largest
migration of people, hence a greater business potential,
It is interesting too to note where these taxes are coming
from. I'll only illustrate Nevada county's, although it is indicative of the recreationally oriented counties,
