Stage between here and Dobbins had a thrilling experience Saturday
morning while going to atrap-he had set in one of the ravines
between here andthe river, Ashe approached he noticed an animal ~~
in the trap, and having his gun and having nothing else
with which to kill it, he returned to the car and took the hammer
from beneath the front seat, and returned to the trap. ;
Instead of holding a small fox or civit cat, there in the jaws
of the small steel trap was a huge coyote-wolf, enraged with anger.
The ferocious animal was caught onlybythe paw of one foot, and
as Hayes approached, it sprang for him his heavy
coat in its mouth and ripping the front of his shirt open with its

‘A party of 18 coming down from the Eagle Bird mine above
Washington Friday had a round of experiences that were exciting
to say the least.
Leaving the mine at 10 in the morning, it took them until 11
that night to make Nevada City. They found fair going until they
reached Fowlers Sawmill, From there to Junction House it was
. a case of digging their way through 18 inches of snow which was
real work and it took all hands. From Junction House down it was
a case of slide inthe wet clay. The lights of Nevada City certainly
looked inviting.

From the support already promised the Nevada County
Railroad, it is almost a certainty that the road is not going to be
junked, which will be cheering news to those who had feared
the worst was about to be realized. Atthe meeting held in Grass
Valley Monday night, the holders of the second mortgage bonds
let it be known that unless there was a 100 per cent sign-up
to use the railroad for freight in preference to trucks, that the
road would assuredly be
Receiver George H. Calanan at the Monday night meeting
brought out the fact that repairs to equipment and right of way
structures were urgently needed and that there were. funds at
hand for making such repairs but that it would be necessary to
arrive at an understanding as to whether the merchants were

It is understood that there is talk of broad gauging the line
at a future date. The Bear River trestle was built standard
mercantile firm in the county and only on wholesale competition

SACRAMENTO — A California State highway bridge was
selected in national competitions as one of the six most
beautiful to be opened to traffic
in 1969 and another was one
of 11 named for awards of
merit.
The Eugene Doran Memorial
Bridge that carries the Juanipero Serra Freeway (Interstate
280) across San Mateo Creek
was a blue ribbon winner in the
"medium span, high clearance”
eategory. A stainless steel
plaque will be mounted on the
Doran Bridge in permanent tribute to its outstanding combination of beauty and utility.
An award of merit inthe same
category went to the Interstate
5 bridge across the Sacramento
River at Elkhorn. it is a twin
span structure.
The California winners were
selected from 149 national entries in the 42nd Annual Prize
Bridge Competitions sponsored
by the American Institute of
Steel Construction.
The judges described the
Doran Bridge as "a graceful
structure that seems to grow
out of its surroundings. I combines form and grace to create
a pleasant viewing experience.”
The bridge is 1600 feet long
and soars 270 feet above the
creek. It has a five span welded
steel girder superstructure that
rests on four concrete piers
consisting of bents with tapered
