person” adventure story in a current Reader's Digest about two
teen-age boys getting their car
stuck in the Mojave Desert. If
they had known enough to release
half the air from the driving
wheels of the car when they wandered into loose sand it would
have been a simple matter for
them to drive back on the road
and be on their way in short order.
People who learned to drive
during the twenties and thirties,
when in most states there was
pavement only in and around the
cities, or those who were reared
on farms and ranches, learned
early how to handle a car under
adverse conditions. Some of this
know ledge could well be included
in auto driving courses today.
True, we do have four-wheeldrive vehicles today--Jeeps,
Scouts, Land Rovers--for travelling where there is no road at all.
But how often, when you get the
urge, to ex plore a scenic bit of
country ona sideroad, do you
happen to be travelling in your
Jeep, even if you are furtunate
enough to own one?
My adventuresome wife and I
have done thousands of miles of
“auto-hiking” over back -country
roads, some of them very rough.
We have yet to call for a tow to
get out of a bad spot, although we
did borrow a set of chains once to
make it across an ice-encrusted
hairpin turn, We have never since
ventured forth without tire chains.
{Useful for towing too.) We also
are equipped with a good jack,
basic mechanic's tools, an axe
and shovel, agallon of water and
several cans of lubricating oil.
(You can puncture a crankcase on
a sharp rock and lose all of the
oil in minutes. )
We wouldn't be without a tiny
compressor called "Engine-Aire”
for inflating tires. Screws into-a
sparkplug thread and the engine
does the pumping. You can get
one at an auto supply store.
Did you ever disconnect a fanbelt to ford a stream or flooded
highway “dip", use bacon rind
for a wheel bearing, drag a log
down a mountain grade when your
brakes gave out? There are simple
ways to extricate yourself and
your car from nearly any dilemma,
No, don'tstifle that urge to go
adventuring off the beaten path.
Auto-hiking is fun and it need not
be’ dangerous if you go perpared.
use a little common sense and
take it slow and easy, with a
sharp eye for rocks, washouts,
sand, mudand all the other little
hazards that were par for the
course to yesterday's motorists,

WILDFLOWER OF THE WEEK
Mountain Campion, Silene montana var. sierrae,
Pink or Chickweed family.
Related tothe popular Indian Pink, this one is not so colorful but
dainty and delicate in white or pink or lavendar shades, Some show
darker markings in the center and on the fringed tips of the petals.
The corolla is mostly enclosed in a long cylindric calyx and flares
into five deeply cut petals which close during mid-day. These
plants are sometimes called catchfly due to the sticky surface of
the leaves and flowers which attracts small insects thus causing
them to meet their doom because they cannot release themselves,
The Greek name meaning saliva, is in allusion to the sticky
herbage of many species, Found in open coniferous forests, they
bloom from June through August.
