July 18.,.At around 5 o'clock
we went to the sauna. It was a
riot, Ilona had some clothes to
wash so Asta and I went in first.
Asta had never thought about all
she was doing before. She cracked
up just thinking about how funny
it must have seemed to me, When
we started hitting ourselves with
spruce branches we went into hysterics! The temp was about 180°,
At first it was a bit unbearable
but then it felt sorta good, It got
terribly hard to breathe though.
By the time we went out to the
lake I thought I'd suffocate for
sure.
Jumping into the lake wasn't as
bad as I thought it would be. I
was so hot that it took a little
time for the water to cool me off.
After it was all over I felt rather
tired but good.
July 19...In me afternoon we
weut visiting to some reiative's
place. Wehadtotakeataxi. The
wuoletamily piled intotnis beautitul, new Ford country sedan.
Tne glory of a good old American
car with LEG room! (Debsis5'9").
The telative's place was very
beautiful and restful. They all
spoke English rather well. One of
the girls had just come back from
Great Britain. But it sounded to
me like she had an Irish accent!
I loved it.
July 20...This afternoon it
rained...I love the rain. It relaxes me. I sat around and read
Chekov all afternoon. Ilona made
some very good doughnuts filled
with prune jam, They tasted
swell,
You won't believe what we did
this evening! They wanted tohear
some American ghost stories, of
all things! So I told them three
and they told me three, I had to
tell pretty insipid ones since it's
hard totranslate words like vam-~
pire. It was sorta fun. At least
they seemed to enjoy it.
July 21.. .Well, today was Johanna's name day (13 year old
sister). It.rained again. Therain
put a damper on her party somewhat, (A name day is the day for
you to celebrate your name.
There's a day for every name.
California each year can be at~tributed to this cause. Quality

amount of oxygen in his blood.

A Million
Sometimes tnere may be more
than one name in a day though.)
The children played all sorts of
games and Johanna (Nippi is her
nickname) opened her presents.
It was almost like a birthday
party. They only celebrate when
they're young kids.
July 22.,.Around noon I was
alone in the house. Asta had gone
tothe store, Ilona was swimming
and Johanna was off somewhere
playing with her friends. "Mother"
and "father" were in Helsinki. So,
there I sat listening to the radio.
And what should come on but “I
Left My Heart in San Francisco"! ©
So I let loose and sang along at
the top of my vibrant lungs! It
was quite spirit lifting, especially
considering I didn't think my
spirit needed lifting at the time.
This evening they tried to find
words too hard for me to pro~nounce. But I passed with flying
colors. I was only a little off on
one or two words,
Oho! Here comes Nippi, right
on schedule. She always comes °
in while I'm writing, looks over
my shoulder, gets a piece of paper
and practices writing the alphabet. It's quite funny. She's done
it for three days in a row now, We
have sort of a little understanding
with each other. Ste knows about”
as much English as I do Finnish.
So we have a brief three or four

word exchange when she comes
intoaroom with me, The rest of
our conversations are carried on
with three or four signs and a million facial expressions.
This afternoon we rowed across
the farm again to get strawberries
and vegetables, I rowed over and
Ilona rowed back...
Nippi just presented me with a
match box full of assorted dead
flies!
At 10 this evening we went to
adance. A fellow I danced with,
to my amazement, spoke English
quite well. He was a gorgeous
blue-eyed, blond haired brain
who knows German, Swedish,
English and some French!
July 24... Around noon I helped
“mother” fix lunch. She really
thinks California must be a dream
place because of all the fruits and
vegetables we get fresh.
We went to the sauna again.
It's really sorta fun, But we had
to hurry because we were going
to another dance!
The place we went was the biggest summer dance place in Finland. I met 3 AFSers there too.
Gee, it was refreshing to see them
We took the bus home...We
walked fromthe bus stop in pourwalk! Boy, what a night!
