Complete 58
Construction Contracts
Fifty-eight contracts, covering
$3,670,000 worth of road and
bridge construction in the National Forests in California, were
awarded during the last fiscal
year, according to Regional Forester Chas. A. Connaughton.
The contracts provide for the
construction of 50 miles of roads
and ten bridges with an aggregate
length of 1073 feet.
Most of the contracts were
awardedin May.and Jun@_of 1964 —
with the work to be completed.
later this year or early in 1965,
Connaughton said. He emphasized that the roads and bridges to
be constructed will serve several
of the uses of the National Forests.
Fifteen miles of road are primar~
ily for recreation, 23 miles are
for administration and fire control
access, and 12 miles mainly for
timber ac¢ess. Most of the bridges
will be located on timber access
roads,
Contracts ranged in value from
less than $10,000 to over $500,
000. One, for 6.1 miles of road
on the Six Rivers National Forest
at a cost of $960,000, is the
largest road contract ever awarded
by the U.S. Forest Service in
California. A bridge contract on
the Klamath National Forest for
$420 ,000 will result in the longest
bridge ever constructed for the
U.S. Forest Service in California 567 feet. The remaining
contracts break down as follows:
two others are for over $100,000,
9 from $50,000 to $100,000, 12
from $25,000 to $50,000, 25
from $10,000 to $25,000, and
eight for under $10,000.
tinued his move up with a second
place win in the seven and a half
mile intermediate race. He was
third place winner in the intermediate event in the Northern Galifornia Championship races in San
Jose the week before.
Dave Green of Grass Valley, a

Striped Bass
Run Smashed
All Records
An exceptionally high run of
striped bass during July has
smashed all records for daily,
monthly and annual recovery of
fish at the Bureau of Reclamation's Tracy Fish Collecting Facility.
More than 17 million fish were
recovered near the Tracy Pumping
Plant during the month, Twohundred and twenty-seven loads of fish
were hauled and dumped further
down the Delta, For one ‘week
during the early part of the
month, recoveries were av eraging
more than a million a day. On
the peak days, recoveries totaled
more than a million and a quarter.
More than 95 percent of the fish
bass. In addition, 418 thousand
catfish, 100 thousand sha d, 84
thousand smelt, 11 thousand
spiny ray and 888 salmon were
recovered at Tracy.
Until last month, the largest
number of fish ever recovered at
the Tracy facility during any one
year was 19 million, only two
million more than the collections
during July along this year.
The Tracy Fish Collecting Facility was designed and built by the
Bureau of Reclamation to save
young ocean going :fish confused
by the flow of water into the giant
pumps at Tracy. The pumps lift
water from the Delta into the
Delta-Mendota Canal.
A system of louvers, resembling a large venetian blind, angles
across the canal leading into the
“pumps. Fish following the flow
toward the pumps shy away from
the louvers and are diverted into
fish tanks.
They are then loaded into tank
trucks and hauled downstream
where they are dumped into the
Delta away from the influence of
the Tracy pumps.
