Slides showed the
development of a series of
planes and designs leading up
to the SR-71. Special alloys
were used so the plane could
withstand stress, heat and
high speed. Because of the
black paint the plane has been
dubbed the “black bird.”
Captain Cirino told of its
world record flights which
included a trip to the air show
in London. Beale Air Force
Base is home for the “black
bird.”
The SR-71 can cruise at
80,000 feet at a speed of more
than 2,000 miles an hour, a
flight faster than the speed of a
bullet.
Its cameras can take pictures at this high altitude that;
are so clear license plate
numbers on cars can be seen.
The purpose, as explained,
is for reconnaisance so its
flights are level.
The plane was used to take
, flood pictures of the big flood
on the River so
engineers could determine
areas of flooding and weak
spots.
The pilot and crew wear
suits those of the
astronauts. These suits weigh
40 pounds. Before each flight
medical checks are required
and high protein meals are
eaten. Specially . trained
technicians assist during the
pre-flight briefing sessions of
about four hours. Fuel consuption is about a gallon per
1.4 miles.
Edmund Dunning, program
chairman, introduced Captain
Cirino. Rotarians invited
interested persons to see and
hear the story of the SR-71.
Jim Kendrick, ‘president,
