One especially welcome guest was Mr. Shaffer's mother from Binghampton, New York. The Shaffers picked her up in San Francisco upon her arrival by * plane from the east. This was her first opportunity to -visit them in their new home. After > a couple of weeks here she went on to Los Angeles to visit an-_ other son before returning home. * Mr. and Mrs. Willis Perry and Mr. and Mrs, James Hedgecock spent a most enjoyable day in Chico last week. As members of the winning selling division for their company they were entertained at a victory dinner. Much to the amusement of the winners, the two losing divisfons were served baked crow. ** * The Davison family, Bruce, Jane, James and Barbara are visiting this week in Southern California. Anaheim was their former home and before school starts again they want to spend some time with family and old’ friends. * * The Fire Dept. Auxiliary had a lovely picnic last Saturday night in Bursills big meadow. All Secession Day workers of the community were invited to get together to relax and celebrate. The youngsters entertained themselves with various noisy games, It was an altogether pleasant and successful community party. *** ‘Last Saturday, Mrs. Doris Taylor accompanied by Mrs. Douglas Ribble and Mrs. Howard Vance of Washington (Nevada Co.) showed up to collect the poke of gold the Rough and Ready Chamber raffled on Secession Day. Mrs. Taylor is from Bakersfield and has been on an extended. vacation. We have been trying to catch up with her since July 4th. She was very pleased with the poke which contained over 2 ounces of gold. Mr. Taylor is working an old shaft in Washington with Mr. Ribble. There were 12 small nuggets in the poke, maybe more than will be found in the old shaft they are clearing. Mr. and Mrs, Allen McCrea whodonated the gold to be raffled were present for the drawing and also at the presentation to the winner. The Taylors enjoy Nevada county and hope to become permanent residents here. ok Mrs, Bea Mackey, our Secession Day artist, spent last weekend visiting friends at Mocassin, California, Mocassin has always fascinated me. Caldwell moved from Rough and Ready to Portland about two years ago. He was about 56 years of age and wasa construction worker, It is believed he may have ’ lost control of his car in trying to avoid hitting an animal in the roadway, according to Helene Hurlbut of Grass Valley who received word of the fatal accident from Caldwell's son in Portland.
