The Grass Valley Western Union office had a bit of a problem on its wires and appealed to The Morning Union for help...via the publicity route. It seemed that for several days Western Union had been “flooded” with urgent telegrams addressed to’ one Louis Popper. But: nary a soul around town seemed to know who he was or where he could be found! So, a front page story in the Morning Union was resorted to-but Mr. Popper...if he ever existed outside someone’s imagination...never did put in an appearance or send anyone to claim all those telegrams! Editorial Comment Of The Week: ‘‘Parents and guardians should not give children the impression that crime, vice and corruption are tolerable and to be lightly taken. Inculcate in them a horror of criminality, deceit and viciousness. Give them a proper moral perspective first above all else.” ; A seven foot sturgeon, weighing in excess of 150 pounds, was taken from the Yuba River near the state highway bridge leading into Marysville from the south....by a crew of workmen from the Marysville Sand Co. The fish was said to be of the deep sea variety and the finders surmised it had gone up-river when water was high and then got stranded when the water level was lowered during the summer heat. A dragline bucket stunned the big black fish and made its capture, intact, a simple feat. The political season reached the ‘speaking out” point when Assemblyworman Cora Woodbridge, incumbent, addressed a meeting of the Mine Workers Protective League in Grass Valley. Accompanying Mrs. Woodbridge was Col. Marshall author of the Marshall Plan for Water Conservation In California. He also spoke to the meeting, but from the standpoint of an engineer and ardent conservationist. He said that when he came to California from Colorado in 1891, his first work was in Nevada City. Mrs. Woodbridge declared that she had played the game “‘like a gentleman”’ (Shades of Women’s Lib!) and had stood’firm for all progressive and humanitarian measures. .’ Movie of the week: ‘‘King Of The Wild Horses” featured Rex, a registered Morgan stallion, under direction of Hal Roach. Roach und him in Coronado, chained in a stall and regarded as a ‘‘killer ‘horse’. But gentle treatment and good food soon changed all that. The magnificent animal became one of the most valuable of all Hal ' Roach’s “special properties” and had a lengthy career in films. Mrs, A.P. Davenport had just returned from San Francisco where she had spent ‘‘several weeks” learning how to bob women’s hair, give marcels, set water waves and give ‘‘relaxing facial treatments’’. Her salon was then.soon opened at 310 Broad Street in Nevada City. seers : ! wi old Highway 40. Hikers must arrange their own car shuttles from Squaw Valley back to Donner Pass.
