Bis ss Bie Sem ns wea bt SULT ARE A at A ea ocean parkSACRAMENTO The state departments of conservation and parks and recreation have recommended that the Pygmy Forest Ecological Staircase along Jug Handle Creek on the Mendocino County coast be included in the State Park System. They also recommend that the present Pygmy Forest Reserve be extended and either transferred from the Department of. Conservation to the Department of Parks and Recreation or managed by both departments under an interagency cooperative agreement. They also recommend that the submerged land to a depth of 200 feet out to a half mile or more offshore from Jug Handle Creek be transferred from the State Lands Commission to the State Park System. These recommendations are published in a recently released report: on results of a joint feasibility study by the two departments. The report recommends acquisition of 642. acres of private lands in the ecological staircase as a first priority and states that subsequent acquisitions 690 acres would be highly desirable. The Pygmy Forest Ecological . Staircase is an approved project . for land acquisition under the The Pygmy Forest Ecological Staircase. consists of five terraces that were formed by wave action along the ancient seacoast and uplifted one by one in staircase fashion. State Parks Director William Penn Mott, Jr. said the staircase contains “ecological and natural values of not only statewide but international significance.”’ However, these values are threatened by logging and subdividing and may be lost forever if quick action is not taken to preserve them. 8 The Nevada County Nowa Wed., Aug. 14,197 4 ‘State wants In Nevada county .
