The anger and its promise of violence were in the air. Anger was a common thing toeach man---they all felt it, but instead of uniting them it divided them man from man, until each man stood sightless and without reason, not even prepared for the fight they were all driving for.. The Irish clan in Eureka South was incensed over accusations of claim jumping laid by an English partnership. Those shots so startled the miners, so confused them that instead of becoming a berserk mob they were suddenly docile, suddenly reasonable men again. Those among them with greatest conscience came forward and the argument became a thing of thoughts expressed by words and it was settled by native intellieculiar kind of justice of the
early isolated mining camps so strange interms of formal written law, yet soright for the time and the circumstances.
