POWER FOR PROGRESS..This PG&E substationin Grass Valley isisymbolic of the
interlacing of power lines over Nevada County, ever expanding, that are furnishing electrical services to varied users in the county and are prepared to’meet the
needs of county growth.
. NEVADA CITY WENT WILD
by Robert Letts, News Bureau Chief, Pacific’Gas and Electric Co.,
Out of the yellowing files
of 1887 newspapers, a clipping from a Nevada County
newspaper (the Weekly Tidings of Grass Valley) brought .
this news of the time:
“Nevada City, the county
seat of the county of the
same name, was in a state
of the wildest excitement
last night.
"The people of the town
were all on the streets and
the men shouted themselves
hoarse and the ladies waved
handkerchiefs. .
“The cause of this ebullition of feeling was that two
electric lights were put in
operation, One was suspended at Broad and Pine
Streets and the other near
the bridge at the foot of
Broad Street.”
Lights alsowere placed in
the National Hotel and in
several stores,

According to the documented history by Charles
M. Coleman, "P.G. and E.
of California, ” this intrusion
of electric light was a major
annoyance to the old established gas companies of the
area, They had enjoyed a
monopoly in street lighting
for too many years and they
tried open opposition, One
of a series of advertisements
(in the Nevada Transcript)
carried this public challenge
by. the gas company:
"The time is here when
the gas works is to lose support, but if the consumers
of thistown will consider
their own interests and the
hazardous and precarious
nature of electricity as a
light, and let ordinary prudence be their guide, they
will make no change. "
But the public paid little
heed to this finger-waggling
and, as the Gilet . account reportsit, “John
Glasson, head of the gas
company, took the obvious
course and bought the intruding electric companies,”
This phenomenon of electric light had been known in
the area for nearly a decade,
Back in April, 1879, a small
power generator had been
installed on the Deer Creek
Claim of the Excelsior Water
_ Company near Smartsville.
This, according to the Nevada Transcript, was the
“first electric light ever introduced in a mining
claim." The account went
on this way:
"Three lights of 3,000
candlepower were placed in
prominent positions upon
the claim.. Although the
night was very dark, the
lights shed a brillirant light

around and enabled the minerstowork asreadily as during the day..The company’s daily cleanup is from
$500 to $1,000 and by running nights also, the yield
of the’ mine can be doubled, “
Thus did light from electricity get its early start in
the Nevada City area.
And gas for lighting also
was an early arrival in Nevada City. A small plant
built in 1859 and the installation of two miles of mains
in the streets made the introduction possible, In 1865
the plant was reorganized as
the Nevada City Gas Works,
at Main and Coyote Streets,
Gas was made from coal,
pitch, pine wood and resin
oil,
Gas wasn't accepted at
first for much beyond light-.
