Grass Valley, Highway crewsrefurbished the. worn-out

then replaced the lines, (Only to have PG&E dig up some
of the new pavement in spots, more chuckles. )

SHELL, . Campaigning is starting early in the Republican .
primary race among those who would like to unseat.
Governor Edmund-G, Brown.
A week ago this morning Joseph Shell, minority leader
in the Assembly, attended a breakfast in Grass Valley ,
with nearly 20 local GOP leaders.
Shell says he isin the race to stay, regardless of which
other candidates vie for the post. Reason: he feels that
he isthe best informed Republican in the state on California fiscal affairs.
And Shell says the fiscal affairs of California are in
such poor shape that they will be the core of the campaign
that he predicts will oust Gov. Brown.
Within the next few months, Shell predicts the fiscal
fortunesin California will force the present administrationto propose new tax bills of $100,000,000 per year,
or make a cut in state expenditures to the same tune.
Shell suggests a cut in state personnel. He says the
state staffin the past two yearshas been growing at a rate
four times faster than the population, and says such a cut
is-possible. wu

Six Die During Heat Wave, Advice Given
GRASS VALLEY.. "At least
six people in California died
during the heat wave of June
14 & 15," Dr. Elbridge.
Best, Nevada County Health
Officer reports.
Five were doing outdoor
labor and one was an iron
worker. Three were 55 years
of age or older and one was
19 years of age. Two deaths
occurred in the Bay Area,
two in Southern California,
and one in the San Joaquin
Valley, and oninthe mountain area.
"Preliminary reports of
occupational fatalities received by the State Department of Industrial Relations
attribute all of the deaths to
heat," Dr. Best said.
Safety precautions to be
followed in hot weather, as
compiled by the State Health
Department's Bureau of Occupational Diseases, include
the following:
1. Avoid all uncessary exertion when weather is hot.
