eens m/e. ‘=~ — ee a 4 The Nevada County Nugget Wednesday, Aug. 16, 1972 “Notes off the Cuff”’ By P. L. Smith Some friends of mine had a really "disturbing" experience in a motel up on the Oregon coast last week. They made reservations with the specific unit of a well-known national chain about three weeks previously. For two adjoining rooms with twin beds, etc. The reservations had been confirmed by post card with the requested agreement to hold the rooms until a "very late hour." They arrived about 9 p.m. on the agreed date, but were told that there were no reservations for any kind of rooms in their names, and that there were no vacancies until the following evening! Showing the post card confirmation did no good, either. The night man merely said ‘Well, we have some part time summer help here that we can't always ‘depend upon!" He just didn't seem to care... and seemed very reluctant to phone other motels in the area to get them accomodations elsewhere. Finally it was accomplished at a place about five miles further up the coast highway; and sometime around 11 o'clock my friends called it a night and turned in. You can imagine how they felt when, about two hours CHP urges extra care on Labor Day “Labor Day weekend is no different from any other holiday weekend to the California Highway Patrol, according to Lt. Mel DeLay, Commander of the Grass Valley area of the CHP: "There will be heavy traffic, hundreds of thousands of vehicles on the roads and highways of California and there will be accidents -in all it will be a typical holiday weekend for the California Highway Patrol." Last year on the Labor Day weekend, 71 persons died in traffic accidents in California, a new record for Labor Day fatalities. “H drivers will drive carefully and according to the law the accident toll can be reduced drastically. Don't you think it's worth a try?" OUR 38h YEAR Service to the Builder and ; the Homeowner OPEN 7 A.M. VISIT OUR DOWNIEVILLE STORE ae later, the phone rang and rang and rang. Answering it just a bit peevishly, my friend learned that it was the night man at the first motel ... calling to apologize ... "Hey, it's real funny sir, but you know what? I checked the wrong bunch of reservation cards ... that's why I didn't find your name the first time . but I found it now and you can have your rooms if you want them!" I'm pretty sure you know how my friend reacted to that!! But I don't think the boss would appreciate my quoting the party verbatim at this point. x ok * She's pretty excited about the development and you really can't blame her. So think something of it if you should happen to see Alice McGee dogtrotting a "loop" up and down Broad Street these days. Some years ago Alice's Style Shop was located at 313 Broad Street. At present Alice's Beauty Shop is at 234 Broad Street in the Dubrow Buildingwhich has just recently been sold. Alice has for-some time felt the need of more space... the old location was just recently vacated and has the desired extra floor space and more parking facilities ... so what better move to make than right back to her "old stamping ground" up the street a piece? Alice is doing her usual beautiful thing in the decorating of the "new" beauty shop and hopes to get all moved before September Ist. But in the meantime, there's the "old" shop to mind for a few more days. * * * Small children out Alta Hill way have a new form of amusement ... they put strange things into the street mail’ boxes ... at least they have been putting strange things into my landlady's box! One evening there was a large horned toad occupying the box, but more than happy to leave that confinement; another time we found a partially eaten hamburger resting atop the day's mail; and on a third recent occasion, a small garter snake slithered out of the box as I reached into it to extracts the day's papers and other items. On each occasion there have been several small children resting in the shade of a large tree about three doors down the street ... and eagerly awaiting the sei mail "pick-up." Washington News By JUDI STEWART A mysterious letter arrived at the Washington Post Office early last week. It was addressed to ''Postmaster". Upon opening, Mrs, Edna Tonner found a copy of an invitation to a gathering to be held on the river above the town of Washington on the weekend of August 1213. On the back of the page was a letter signed by a concerned parent who had apparently found this invitation in her home, and felt the community of Washington should be notified of the possible influx of young people. Mrs. Tonner notified most people in the area, and the county sheriff's office. The party must have been found out by more than this one parent, because it did not materialize here on the river. * * *K *K The Brush Disposal (B.D.) Crew of the U. S. Forest Service stationed at White Cloud, have been doing some clean up work on an area of land along the Graniteville road. They are
clearing and stacking slash left by loggers. The useable wood is being stacked and left for anyone to pick-up for firewood. The other slash will be burned this coming winter. This maybe a way for Graniteville residents to get a little easy firewood. I understand what has been cut so far is mostly cedar. Iam sorry that as of September lst I will no longer be writing this weekly column. I just don't seem to have the time to do it justice lately, with all my other jobs. I sure hope there is someone in Washington who feels a need for this column, as I do, and will apply to the Nugget for the position. You Bet turn lane contract Sacramento--The award of a contract for highway improvement in Nevada county was announced by James A. Moe, State Director of Public Works. The project consists of widening Route 174 and constructing a left-turn storage lane at You Bet Road, about five miles east of Grass Valley. A $20,171.50 contract was awarded the R.J. Miles Company of Colfax, which submitted the lowest of nine bids opened in Sacramento on July 19, Program tests effects of Truckee wastewater A unique three-month program to assess the effects of the disposal of highly-treated wastewater on the Truckee River is under way on the grounds of the Truckee Sanitary District located east of Truckee and _ south of the Truckee River. The study is one of a number of programs being sponsored by the State Water Resources Control Board and the TahoeTruckee Sanitation Agency to determine the best system for wastewater disposal in the North Tahoe-Truckee area, The study will determine the degree of treatment of sewage effluent necessary to protect the beneficial uses in the Truckee River. Water from the river is being pumped to four 96-foot flumes which contain Truckee River fish and rocks with attached growth, thus simulating actual ‘river conditions. Raw sewage from the Truckee Sanitary District is pumped to a pilot plant where the sewage undergoes highly sophisticated treatment and then is pumped onto three Navy reserve unis again is champion Cdr. J. B. Wilson, USN, of Reno, in his farewell talk to members of Auburn's Naval Reserve Surface Division 12-10, announced last week that the local Placer, Nevada and El Dorado County Reservists had again been named the outstandingsmall surface Division in the 12th Naval District. He also indicated that they were among the top three units nationally and results of final evaluations would be due during September. In closing, Cdr. Wilson a Navy SEAL commander, turned the Auburn Unit and his Renobased command over to Cdr. C, K, McCandless. Cdr, McCandless is a Nevada County property owner with an eye on early retirement, who stated that the local reservists had set a pattern for success envied by Naval Reserve units across the country. Final inspection for derby cars There will be a final inspection for all Derby cars entered in the Downhill Derby Thursday, at 6 p.m. at Memorial Park. Those cars which have not already been inspected and approved must be there. If a car has entered the race and not been inspected, it will be subject to inspection at the race. If it does not qualify, it will be eliminated from the competition, The Grass Valley Elk's, who sponsor the Downhill Derby ask that everyone cooperate and bring their cars to Memorial Park Thursday at 6 p.m. of the flumes with the ratio of effluent and river water varying in each, The fourth flume will contain only Truckee River water for comparative purposes, Effects of the pilot plant effluent will be measured on the animal and plant life inthe three flumes. Emphasis will be to measure any stimulatory or toxic effects on attached plant life, and similar effects on aquatic insects and fish. The discharge from the flumes is being disposed of in existing Truckee Sanitary District percolation ponds and will not be discharged to the river. Bill B. Dendy, executive officer of the state Water Resources Control Board, said the study is the result of. the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) disapproval of a. water quality control plan for the Truckee River watershed. The plan would have permitted the controlled discharge into the Truckee River of highlytreated reclaimed water from a regional wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal system serving the north and west portions of the Lake Tahoe Basin and the Truckee River watershed. Cooperating in the study are the EPA and the State of Nevada's Bureau of Environmental Health, Study results will allow Nevada water quality managers to assess the effects of similar discharge to the Nevada portion of the Truckee River. Dendy, in emphasizing the environmental and economic advantages of a regional system as opposed to fragmented systems, stated the water quality control plan also called for the formation of the Tahoe-Truckee Sanitation Agency (TTSA) consisting of the five present districts. in the area: the North Tahoe and Tahoe City Public Utility Districts, .the Alpine Springs and Squaw Valley County Water Districts, andthe Truckee Sanitary District. The formation of TTSA was finalized in May and that agency in coordination with the state board's consultants, is studying 12 alternative wastewater management plans for the area to determine the cost and environmental impact of each alternative, The pilot plant at the Truckee Sanitary District was constructed by Environmental Qualtiy Engineering, Inc. of Oakland and the assessment of the biological effects of reclaimed wastewater on the river is being conducted by the University of California Sanitary Engineering Research Laboratory, both under contract to the State Board. Concurrently, Kaiser Engineers, Inc., of Oakland, also under contract tothe state board is conducting a water quality data collection and evaluation program on the Truckee River from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake, Data will be collected from 12 sampling stations six in Calfornia and six in Nevada. The three contracts total $173,000. Results of the state boardsponsored’ studies __—'will be furnished to TTSA for use in their project planning effort.
