Giant Role In County’s Economy
By Henry Branagh,
Tahoe National Forest
Supervisor
The Tahoe National Forest plays an important part
in the economy of Nevada
County. Its water, timber,
recreation, grazing, and wild
life resources are *being
managed and utilized in the
combination that wll best
meet the long-time needs
within the Tahoe Forest’s
boundaries are in Nevada,
Sierra, and Placer Counties.
Forty-five percent of this
is in private ownership, and
not under Forest Service
control. One hundred forty
thousand acres of National
Forest land lie within Nevada County.
of the public. The prime
objective is to produce the
highest possible annual or
periodic output of the renewable resources without
imparing the productivity
of the land. Through this
type of management, I believe the economy of. the
county should be enhanced
over the years.

County. It is expected that
this annual sustained yield

to 15 MM. Only marked
trees are cut, and scaling,
as well as timber sale supervision, is by Forest Service employees. Land adjacent to live streams is protected for watershed, fish,
and recreational purposes.
Special measures are also
taken to protect scenic
strips where National Forest lands adjoin highways
and lakes, and in recrea .

Total Forest income from
timber, grazing, special use
fees, and power averages
$1,250,000.00 each year. Under Federal law, twenty-five
percent of this is returned
to the counties in lieu of
taxes. Each county’s share
of these twenty-five percent receipt funds is based
on the percentage of Tahoe
National Forest land lying
within it. Last year Nevada
County received $65,500 in
lieu of taxes. In addition,
property taxes are collected

For sustained production,
we must protect our Forest
from the ravages of fire and
the myrid resultant damages. Will each camper, hiker, logger, fisherman, miner, and sight-seer please do
his part---especially during
this period of extreme fire
danger?» This will cause
your Forest to continue to
pay tangible as well as intangible dividends.
