Its water, timber, recreation, grazing, and wild life resources are *being managed and utilized in the combination that wll best meet the long-time needs within the Tahoe Forest’s boundaries are in Nevada, Sierra, and Placer Counties. Forty-five percent of this is in private ownership, and not under Forest Service control. One hundred forty thousand acres of National Forest land lie within Nevada County. of the public. The prime objective is to produce the highest possible annual or periodic output of the renewable resources without imparing the productivity of the land. Through this type of management, I believe the economy of. the county should be enhanced over the years. It is expected that this annual sustained yield cut will soon he increased to 15 MM. Only marked trees are cut, and scaling, as well as timber sale supervision, is by Forest Service employees. Land adjacent to live streams is protected for watershed, fish, and recreational purposes. Special measures are also taken to protect scenic strips where National Forest lands adjoin highways and lakes, and in recrea . tional areas. An example of this reforestation work can be found along Highway 20 in the vicinty of the AlphaOmega Historical Monument, White Cloud is the largest of seven campgrounds within the county. Boy Scout, Girl Scout, and other youth camps are also operated under special use permit within the county. Total recreational use in 1959 was 175,000 man-days in this area, which is an increase of 89 percent over the past five years. ‘We
hope to continue receiving more “Operation Outdoors” funds to meet the increasing recreational use. Headquarters for the Tahoe National Forest, as well as that of the Nevada City Ranger District;-are located on Banner Road. The shop and warehouse are in Nevada City: District Ranger for Nevada City is Frank Sodolski. Paul Madden serves Big Bend district. There are 40 permanent residents cf Nevada County who work on the Tahoe. In the summer, another 50 employes are added to bolster the fire protection, timber sales} engineering, and campground maintenance organizations. A total of 270 people are employed on the entire Tahoe during the summer months, Total Forest income from timber, grazing, special use fees, and power averages $1,250,000.00 each year. Under Federal law, twenty-five percent of this is returned to the counties in lieu of taxes. Each county’s share of these twenty-five percent receipt funds is based on the percentage of Tahoe National Forest land lying within it. Last year Nevada County received $65,500 in lieu of taxes.
