Ihavenever been so impressed
as when I walked intothe immaculately ke pt home of Mrs,
Mabel Wilson at-379Mill Street
in Grass Valley last week.
I was still further impressed
when I chatted with Mrs, Wilson and learued that aside from
first being a mother and homemaker, she had, and still has,
many hobbies, Among her
various hobbies are writing,
knitting, crocheting, canning
and preserving, cooking for one
person up to a crowd of guests,
and piano lessons,
These activities may not be
unusual for the average woman,

average woman. She has accomplished all of this, and much
more, without her vision,
. Mrs, Wilson was a very small
girl-when-she-tost-her-sight,
however, her parents believed
in rearing her to be self sufficient
as they did her fourteen brothers
and sisters, showing no partiality because of her sight. Being
the eldest, she learned many
housekeeping chores including
cooking and caring for those
younger than herself,
Born in Arkansas, Mrs, Wilson
moved with her parents to Oklahoma when quite young, It
was there she martied and became the mother of two sons:

became a widow, she took employment as a medical secretary; a public relations representative for an organization of
blind people, and taught piano
lessons,:
Mrs, Wilson came to Grass
Valley six years ago and immediately surrounded herself
with many friends, She enjoys
life to the fullest by doing for
others -meeting new people
through her tape club,
The tape club is made up of
blind people who make recordings of their activities, hobbies
and experiences, These are exchanged with others and in that
way many good friends are made
and helpful ideas obtained.
She also makes plane trips
back to St, Paul and Memphis
to keep in touch with her sons
and their growing families,
Frequent visits are made to
Oklahoma to visit her parents,
who will soon celebrate their
62nd wedding anniversary,
To date, Mrs, Wilson has nine
piano pupils, however, by the
time school starts, she will have
more than twenty. Her heart is
in her teaching and in the young
people she loves so much,
