Bes BMT ev = By Fay M. Dunbar 273-2934 The Democrats of Nevada County went Hawaiian at their luau on Sunday with a real fervor, Frangipani flowers (Hibiscus to you and me) lined the walkway and before the evening was over, found their way behind a few very attractive feminine ears, Leis for everyone and Hawaiiandress made Pioneer Park a veritable tropical garden. The roast pig, nicknamed Ronald, was the basis for the Hawaiin menu, Ronald graced the spit from early morning, with a merry crew to keep him busily roasting over the heat, all day, There was an excellent turnout and everyone had fun even the very young who found the little creek through the park a most inviting place to explore, The only thing missing was a Hawaiian guitar, Lovely music provided by Mrs, Edith Harvesty was with an electric organ, Miss Rosa Stuart complete with hula skirt was a treat for everyone with her grace and truly interpretive hands, The singing was provided by Priscilla West who, at the insistance of the very appreciative audience had to repeat many of her lovely numbers, I've been married 44 years and the Hawaiian Wedding Song still makes me feel like it was right how. The Mai Taits improved everyones attitude. It was a truly happy crowd, Even at cleanup time! Mrs, Charlotte Halstead, chairman of the luau, Joe Slober, chairman of the central committee, and both Democratic clubs are to be complimented on a beautiful party. Even Ruth Martin and L who did the decorations feel mighty prideful, 7 * * Next party on my attention list is the district fair, Always seems to come at the busiest time of the year, Irrigating, summer company, and canning are in full swing, Anyway I don't have any special talents so I have to enjoy it vicariously. I like working with community groups who have fair booths of some kind, And every one of our 4-H entries is a very special treat, Best of all is when neighbors enter some form of the competition, Elaine Vogt will be there with her baked goods that even look delectable after days in the display case, Lucille McCrea will surely have
some interesting paintings or etchings of Rough andReady. And this year Sue Fay is entering some flower arrangements which will be especially interesting. It is Sue's first attempt at this kind of f thing and I hope she wins a whole bouquet of ribbons. Pam_Fay is entered in English and Western Equitation and Western Pleasure. Pam sure loveshorses, She rode Larry Filers horse last weekend at the Penn Valley Riders Gymkhana and did very well in Western Equitation, I shall loook for your name among the competitors too this time. * ; * The Rough and Ready Chamber meeting last week discussed the community workshop which no one questioned as a wonderful and worthwhile venture, Something should be done and our Chamber representatives.Allen Brown and Charles Deardorf will be trying to help, Another item, which was well accepted, was the encouragement of efforts of our Fire Dept, to get piped water right through the center of Rough and Ready, Adequate dependable water is one of the prerequisites ofa lower fire insurance rating. Action was taken by the board to enlist Dr, Bert Spaite to serve on the board to replace Joyce Thomas who finds that with a business in Grass Valley, she needs her time for improvements in that center, Conne Baer will arrange the chamber booth in the entrance building at the fair. It will feature the old Blacksmith Shop this year. She is going to need your help and any interesting Blacksmith Shop memorabilia you may have, Irene Lanzendorfer and Allen Brown are preparing the staffing of the booth, Tweleve hours a day for 4 days is 48 hours, Give them a ring, The chamber will be selling chamber memberships at the fair, Pick up your donation ticket for the Blacksmith Shop from any chamber member or any local business, Percy Weeks leaves this week to cut (or would you call it Frog since it's done with an instrument called a frog) enough shakes to finish the re-roofing job, He needs another helper. Give me a ring if you would like a few days vacation in the woods, Percy's Claim, where the Forest Service allows him to cut these shakes, is at Happy Camp on the Klamath River, Another project suggested for our town to get busy on was a blacktopped parkway around the Historical Marker at the entrance to the Grange Hall, now Mountain Rose Rd. In 1854 the old Lodge Hall was called Mountain Rose Lodge #22, Independent Order of Odd Feloows, so in keeping with our ~ mining and historical theme and with the encouragement of the Rough and Ready Grange the road committee asked that the road be named Mountain Rose Rd, and as you know our names were accepted, Signs are being prepared for marking your roads now. Everette Burkard will rout out the letters in redwood and our 4-Hers are being asked to paint them, The firemen, with your help, will install them according to very complicated County and State regulations, When the job is completed the chamber will be asking for your help in defraying a very minor (approx, $5.00) expense involved, There are from two to 22 people on a road so it won't break any of us, That's what cooperation can-do, 5 * * = * * Last week I told vou I didn't have any vital statistics for our new baby. Well, grandfather Beatie tells us her name is Miss Elisa Rashelle Beatie, No nicknames please, just Elisa, We don't have too many new parents in our very grown up neighborhood but we have lots of grandparents, The Don Litchfields of Miners Way just acquired this status for the first time. Young Bill Litchfield and his bride of two years, the former Clelia Palmeiri, are the proud parents, Pat and Donare planning a trip to Southern California this weekend, They will take Lillian Hammer of Herperia, Pat's mother, back with them. Mrs, Hammer spends several weeks vacationing here each summer. Young Eric Ryan Litchfield and his mother will return home with them for a frief visit. Clelia and Eric will spend a couple of weeks visiting Eric's other grandparents, tthe Palmeiris in Grass Valley. ok * * * Miss Dee Dee (Deanne) Moore who had open heart surgery recently is home from the hospital and doing just grand; Their line is busy this morning so I suspect that DeeDee is busy. Her friend Nola Vogt let me know when Dee Dee came home, These two girls are very interested in sheep raising and really keep in touch, Dee Dee is looking forward to school in September, Simeon Grieme is in the hospital at Martinez and doing as well as can be expected, according to Dora, The bad part is that due to:the distance, Dora can only visit on weekends, Simeon's pride and joy, his birds, including pheasants, have tobe tended daily which doesn't tend to uncomplicate Dora's life just now, Dora, if you didn't know, is one of our postal clerks and that perfectly terrific Secession Day dance hall queen, * * * * The Rough and Ready Grange meets next Friday, August 20, Summer meetings begin at 8 p.m. with potluck refreshments after the meeting, Plans for their ye booth at the fair will ove CAQ ae J Bn (® Y periny hin kh Pas ‘ .
