THIS LITTLE BIRD, a grosbeak, sort of adopted the family of Barbara
Beard on Banner Mountain after its mother pushed it from the nest.
Some neighborhood children, knowing Mrs. Beard is a bird watcher, told
her about the waif so she fed and cared for it for the past months. The
bird unconcernedly sits on the heads and shoulders of children, such as
Bill Beard, here. At left is his sister, Mary, and at right, is David Cremarosa, a neighbor.
Recreation Money
May Be Split Evenly
TRUCKEE — The state re
creation money allocated to. Nevada county. will be split evenly between Grass Valley’s Conon Park and a Truckee facility, if the county recreation commission’s recommendation is followed.
The recreation group last
night unanimously approved an
equal split between the two
competitors. Grass Valley officials had sought a larger Share
for Condon.
Since $75,000 has been allocated to this county, the recommendation is that $37,500 be
granted to Condon and an equal
amount to Truckee.
Improve 66 Acrés
The money for Condon Park
reportedly will be used to begin’ installing © underground
water and sewer systems for 66
acres which have been idle up
to now because they do not have
those public services, Only
some 10 acres of the Grass Valley park have been developed
to date.
The recreation commission’s
recommendation now will be
forwarded to the county board
of supervisors, which probably
will study the issue later this
month. .The supervisors have
the final word locally on what
park is to get how much, but
then technical state rules must
be followed closely before either
area actually will receive funds.
Areas About Even
In voting to divide the $75,000
evenly, the commissioners concluded the merits of the two
recreation areas are about
even, it was reported.
The action was based on criteria presented by Truckee Recreation District with amendments added by Grass Valley,
Commission Chairman Ernie
Harries reported.
“This is a hard working commission, looking at the county
as one piece of cheese, and all
of its citizens have to work together to develop recreation,”
Harries said later.
The fact that property owners
of Truckee Recreation District
pay a tax of almost 20 cents
per $100 of assessed valuation
to develop their park was
mentioned. It was reported that
the tax produced about $40,000
this year,
Commissioner Barbara Sailor
said citizens of the western part
of Nevada county should realize it takes taxation to get recreation, and they should impose such taxes,
Harries. noted that recreation
is one of the most important
things in Nevada county, and
any recreation which is develjoped—whether in the eastern
or western end — will help
everyone.
Sees Good Return
He estimated both the Condon
and Truckee park developments
will show a two to one return
on dollars spent.
The Condon Park proposal
had been presented to the commission by Pat Ingram, Grass
Valley engineer. The Truckee
proposal was presented by Ken
Anderson,
With interest in the recommendation high, some 40 persons attended the meeting in the
county building at Truckee.
The Truckee park proposal includes tennis courts and an ice
rink. It encompasses 64 acres
along Highway 267, which is the
Brockway shortcut between
Truckee and North Lake Tahoe.
It was noted Truckee has applied for federal matching funds
to go with its share of state
park money, and Harries recommended that Grass Valley
Officials seek similar federal
funds for Condon,
The $75,000 is available to
local, but regionally oriented,
parks in Nevada county through
the 1964 bond measure approved by voters statewide.
County Awarded
Aviation Grant
WASHINGTON, D. C. -Congressman Harold T.
“Bizz” Johnson, representing Nevada County,
has announced the approval of an additional
Federal Aviation Administration grant of $18,515 for the development
of the Truckee-Tahoe
airport.
Congressman Johnson
said that. $74,398 in federal funds has been allocated for construction of
a cross-wind runway and
turn-around.
The additional funds will
boost the total allocation
to the project to $92,913.
BankAmericard
Enjoys Increase
BankAmericard officials have announced the
all-purpose credit card
enjoyed a 53.4 per cent
sales increase in California, and _ nationally,
passed the 5,000,000
mark in cardholders during the first six months
of 1967.
Mid-year figures just
released by John A. Dillon, vice president and
California director, show
total gross Bank Americard sales reached
a record $142.8 million,
an increase of $49.7 million over the same period
last year.
BankAmericard sales
nationally reached $190,000,000, including $47,000,000 from banks licensed to issue the card
outside California. Most
of these banks, however,
did not begin BankAmericard operations until
March or April so their
sales do not represent
a six month period, Dillon explained.

adopted ‘mother’, Barbara Beard isn’t around,
Greta flies next door where Phyllis Cremarosa,
shown here, baby sits the bird. Mrs. Beard hopes
Greta will leave her human homes soon, because
it will be time for grosbeaks to migrate south for
the fall. However, the issue is in doubt. One day,

TO SIR WITH LOVE
Sidney Poitier portrays a
teacher in a school near the
London docks in To Sir With
Love. His teen-age pupils are
rough, tough and untidy youngsters whose manners and attitudes portray the worst of the
modern-day youth.
Poitier analyzes the social
rebellion in’ these youngsters
and decides to treat them as
adults. After many room showdowns and corridor run-ins the
rebellious youths begin to
address him as ‘‘sir.’’
From here on there’s a definite change in attitude. The
class enters the school room
quietly and actually begin to
act like disciplined adults. They
begin to dress with more taste
and many of the boys cut their
unkempt locks.
All in all there’s a point for
thought revealed in this film
and Pointier handles his part
well.
