DOESN'T THAT smell good? Gail Dolan, daughter of Ken Dolan,
a Nevada City Lion, (photo at left) stirs a secret sauce which
will go into tacos the club will sell at the coming county fair.
Milton Heath, president of the club, holds a dish of onions
which will go into the concoction. Carolyn Heath, chairman
of the Neva Lions Taco Committee, left, and Marguerite
Grossman are shown (right photo) as they ladle taco sauce
into containers. The sauce will. be frozen until the fair
opens Aug. 21. This year will mark the 12th year the Lions
have operated a taco booth under the trees at the fairgrounds.
‘Mrs. Heath and Mrs. Grossman each are three year veterans of
the project. 2 (Union Photos)
NC Lions prepare for Fair taco booth
Nevada County fairgoers, in
the past 11 years, have eaten
88,000 tacos prepared with 8,250
pounds of hamburger simmered
in a secret sauce.
The above statistics were
gleaned from records of the
Nevada City Lions Club, which
this year will sell tacos ina
familiar setting a the fairgounds
“for the 12th consecutive year.
Neva Lions (the auxiliary to
the club) browned 800 pounds of
. hamburger for the sauce for the
coming fair at a "cook-in" held
this week in the Nevada City
Veterans Building.
The sauce, when seasoned
to taste, was stored in three
pound containers and frozen
until the fair opens Aug. 21.°
The Lions and their ladies
traditionally cook andserve
tacos from their station under
the trees.
The successful taco venture
is the result of one of the club's
"biggest flops". The story of
the tacos as told by the
Tattletale, a Lions’ club publication goes like this:
"One of the Lions largest undertakings resulted in the biggest flop. However, the local
service club bounced back with
their most successful and sus-.
taining project yet. In 1958, the
Lions prepared to feed an estimated 5,000 persons barbecued
chicken, but less than 2,000
showed and the club officers
were forced to sign a $1,500
note at the bank to pay the costs,
Some members were eating
frozen barbecued chicken a year
later.
"Two months after the fiasco,
the Lions operated a taco booth
at the county fair, and commenceéd a most lucrative enterprise which paid off the bank
\
note.
The taco booth at the four day
fair now ‘provides more than
$1,500 annually for the community improvement fund although the operation takes the
combined efforts of all members and their. wives. During
this past county fair (1968) the
Lions used over 750 pounds of
meat in preparing over 8,000
tacos," ~
R. Peter Ingram was president of the club during the 1958
59 year when the taco project
originated and is reported to
have formed a dislike for barbecued chicken that same year.

Two fire departments set up new booths
NEW FAIR FACILITIES have been erected by twoof the area's
volunteer fire departments, At left above is the new booth of
the Watt Park VFD and at right is the stand of the Gold Flat
