crew to fight a fire which had started near Blue Canyon and
reportedly was crossing the ridge down into Bear Valley. Origin
and other details were still somewhat obscure.
James M. Foley, prominent Nevada City businessman, died
suddenly in his home. He was born March 6, 1871 in Oroville and
was left an orphan at three years of age. His early life was spent in
Boy’s Convent in Grass Valley and at St. Mary’s Boy’s Convent in
Oakland. He returned to Nevada City in 1887 and learned the candy
trade, in which he later prospered. On : 2; 1899,
he married Miss Emma Flewellen of Nevada City, and they had six
children who survived him.
Pike City residents Hawley Chatfield, Gordon Wood, Tom
Rose, Myra Nisley Solon and Oliver Chatfield were called out to
assist other Forest Service crews in suppressing a timber fire
ranging along the highway below Camptonville. The loss had not
been estimated, but more than 1000 acres of prime timber was
destroyed during the first 24 hours of the fire.

Nevada County Fairgrounds on
Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.
This show is being held in an
exclusive’ place under large
shade trees with benches
provided for the comfort of all
spectators. Dogs from all parts
of California and Nevada will be
competing for ribbons, rosettes,
trophies and best in show.
The Nevada County District
Fair dog show is well known and
has been recognized to be.one of
the largest and best matches on
the coast.

The Gold Spike Track Club
has sponsored the event for the
past 6 years with the help of
local businesses such as
Nevadaco Realty which has
donated the awards this year.
There will be a 13 and under
girls race, and a 14 and over
“women’s race, a women’s 35 and
older senior race, a 9-under boys
880 yd. run, a 1% mile run for 1014 boys, a 2 mile run for 15-18over men’s run, and a 35 and
over men’s senior run.

_The Golden Empire Cross
Country run has quite a history.
Six years ago Nick Vogt and Don
Bennette organized the first
annual run. When only 17
competitors Showed up for the .
race Bennette and Vogt became
concerned about the track and
field program in Nevada
County. The outcome of this
dissatisfaction was the
organization of Nevada County’s
first A.A.U: Track Association,
the Gold Spike Track Club.
The club now has over 100
active members and has greatly
enriched the track and _ field
program in northern California. ©

festivals such as Oktoberfest,
Fourth of July events, three-ring
circus, automobile racing, flea
markets, 4-H fairs, band con; certs, Scoutoramas and flower
shows, to name a few, are events
that use the fair facilities.
Of course, Shine doesn’t do
this all by himself but he does
head-up a very competent yeararound staff that assist him in
the fairgrounds
with the office work. Shine also
brings in some efficient young
office girls to write letters,
answer phones and to help out in
other capacities. This year Ruth
Darling, Gina Dusch and Lynn
Slattery are the helpers around
the office, :
Outside, of course, the
-around work must go on.
Matt Eckola has been there the —
longest. Norton Heath operates
all the equipment and repairs
almost anything. Don Schmidt
lives on the grounds and is
always around to lend a helping
hand. This team is assisted
busy times by~ Matt
Mello, Bill and Ernie Medlyn,
Earle Brown.and Stanley Stick.
To get things really in shape for
the fair, trustees from the
Nevada county jail work with agroup from the Neighborhood
Youth Corps in soil. tilling,
planting and painting.
Nevada county’s beautiful
fairgrounds need a lot of use
with some tender loving care.
